Cabal collects ghost stories. He buys and resells rare books as an occupation, and collects ghost stories as an enthusiasm. The standards of value in his occupation depend on rarity and condition. The standards he applies to his enthusiasm are more exacting: "Will be personal testimony, will be a statement of facts free from interpretation, and will be true." His stories involve malevolent beings, haunted end-papers, and things made out of dust and whispers. These stories are not set in remote farmhouses or ruined castles, but in basement bookstores, in dingy apartments, in city streets. Cabal is a not a sympathetic man; hard, cold, but capable of moving in this world of shadows.
