Shaping the Digital Dissertation

This volume is a timely intervention that not only helps demystify the idea of a digital dissertation for students and their advisors, but will be broadly applicable to the work of librarians, administrators, and anyone else concerned with the future of graduate study in the humanities and digital scholarly publishing. Roxanne Shirazi, The City University of New York Digital dissertations have been a part of academic research for years now, yet there are still many questions surrounding their processes. Are interactive dissertations significantly different from their paper-based counterparts? What are the effects of digital projects on doctoral education? How does one choose and defend a dig...

This cutting edge book considers how advances in technologies and new media have transformed our perception of education, and focuses on the impact of the privatisation of digital tools as a mean of knowledge production. Arguing that education needs to adapt to the modern learner, the book’s unique approach is based on a disassociation with the deeply ingrained attitude with which people have traditionally viewed education – learning the existing symbolic systems of certain disciplines and then expressing themselves strictly within the operational modes of these systems. The ways of knowledge production – exploring, recording, representing, making meaning of and sharing human experienc...

Blount County was carved out of the territory ceded to the State by the Creek Indians following their defeat at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend. The earliest settlers began streaming into the former wilderness as early as 1817. Blount was originally a large county, but over the decades pieces were taken to make up other adjoining counties such as Jefferson, Marshall, Etowah, and Cullman. Every cemetery within the contemporary boundaries of Blount was visited by the author and each readable tombstone was copied to develop the contents of this three volume series. Most of the cemeteries were read in 2002. Volume 1 covers alphabetically H through P, beginning with the Hipp Family Cemetery and concluding with the Phillips Cemetery (sometimes called the Old County Line Cemetery). This book is vital to any serious student of Blount County genealogy and history.

The book suggests an alternative diagnosis of the apparent ineptitude of the modern liberal democracy and proposes that both populist movements-totalitarianism and socialism-are the results of the Cold War race. The prior is an offshoot of the neoliberalist psychology of a self-possessive individual, and the former is a reactionary wave to the greatest inequality such psychology has engendered.Born and grown in the former Soviet Union, through the stories of her childhood and her doctoral study in education in Australia, Redman develops a unique perspective taking the launch of Sputnik by the Soviet Union in 1957 as an anchor to build her thesis. Redman argues that counteracting the actions ...
