Ancestors of the Bortel Family of Northwest Ohio, Michigan and Lancaster Pennsylvani
Descendants of a Hessian Soldier taken at Saratoga during the American Revolution in October of 1777. Escaped during the forced march of the "Convention Army" in December of 1778 near Lancaster PA and never left the area. He produced five children who Pioneered the State of Ohio, later settling in Henry and Wood counties.The original faamily name was Bartles and that mutated to Bortel/Bortle.Over five thousand descendants descend fron this one Hession Soldier named George Bartles from Brunswick Germany.

This schedule represents a complete list of the heads of families in North Carolina at the time of the adoption of the Constitution. Under law, the marshals were required to ascertain the number of inhabitants within their respective districts, omitting Indians not taxed, and distinguishing free persons (including those bound to service for a term of years) from all others; the sex and color of free persons; and the number of free males 16 years of age and over. The object of the inquiry last mentioned was, undoubtedly, to obtain definite knowledge as to the military and industrial strength of the country.

The marriage records span the period from 1639 to 1801 and are arranged in chronological order. Each of the more than 10,000 marriage entries includes record the names of the bride and groom and the date and place of the marriage. Every person named in the records can also be found in the extensive name index at the back of the book.
