The Soulless

Valvermont was once the home of war veteran Gwenael Chabod, who has now been appointed commandant over the city's garrisons. His lover, Orin, a venerable priest of orc descent, is by his side when a man is transformed into a soulless creature before Gwenael's very eyes. Shortly afterwards, a young woman is killed. The only eyewitness is the thief Jaleel. His report uncovers horrors - and puts his own life in danger. Alongside his new friends and allies, Gwenael hunts the dark spirit that has taken over Valvermont, unaware of how close the darkness already is to him. And the whole time, Jaleel is by his side, evoking the most contradictory feelings in him.

There is clearly a growing interest among teenagers in all things magical and difficult to explain. The theme of good and evil is prominent, as is the need to feel a being of some kind is watching out for you and keeping you from harm. Following the huge success of Glennyce Eckersley's previous books, such as An Angel At My Shoulder and Saved By The Angels, she is now turning her attention to stories of teenagers seeing angels and other psychic phenomenon. These include angels appearing in mysterious circumstances, hearing music without being able to trace where it's coming from; angels in nature; encounters of angels by teenagers from other countries; examples of teenagers hearing an 'inner voice' which guided them through adversity, and many more. Full of intriguing stories and spine-tingling tales, this book is sure to set every teenager's teeth on edge, make their hair stand on end - and warm their hearts.

This is not a gentle story. I have not lived a gentle life. If while you're reading my story you become uncomfortable when I speak very openly about my sexual feelings, or if you get pissed at me for cussing all the time, or if it offends you when I curse God, that's perfectly okay. You have a right to your own feelings and opinions, and so do I. If I had tried to "pretty it up," it wouldn't be how it really happened.

Multidisciplinary Approaches to Language Production

This volume comprises contributions from different disciplines (cognitive psychology, linguistics, computer science, neuroscience) concerned with the generation of natural speech. It summarizes the outcome of a six-year long priority program funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) that aimed at bringing together colleagues with different viewpoints but sharing a principal interest in the cognitive processes underlying language production. The result is a state-of-the-art discussion of one of the most fascinating branches of human behavior taking into account a particularly rich multidisciplinary empirical data base.

Making Sense Of Children'S Drawings

Making Sense Of Children'S Drawings

"Making Sense of Children's Drawings is enlivened with the real drawings of seven young children collected over three years. These drawings stimulated dialogues with the children, parents and practitioners whose voices are reported in the book. The book makes an argument for us to rethink radically the role of drawing in young children's construction of meaning, communication and sense of identity. It provides insights into the influence of media and consumerism, as reflected in popular visual imagery, and on gender identity formation in young children. It also offers strong messages about the overemphasis on the three Rs in early childhood education.".

Evolutionary Phonology

Evolutionary Phonology is a theory of sound patterns which synthesizes results in historical linguistics, phonetics and phonological theory. In this book, Juliette Blevins explores the nature of sounds patterns and sound change in human language over the past 7000–8000 years, the time depth for which the comparative method is reasonably reliable. This book presents an approach to the problem of how genetically unrelated languages, from families as far apart as Native American, Australian Aboriginal, Austronesian and Indo-European, can often show similar sound patterns, and also tackles the converse problem of why there are notable exceptions to most of the patterns that are often regarded as universal tendencies or constraints. It argues that in both cases, a formal model of sound change that integrates phonetic variation and patterns of misperception can account for attested sound systems without reference to markedness or naturalness within the synchronic grammar.
