A retórica
Partindo de um breve histórico das origens da retórica, Meyer trata da definição da retórica clássica, segundo Platão, Cícero e Aristóteles, e da definição moderna, segundo Chaim Perelman, o criador da retórica moderna. Depois, estabelece a distinção entre retórica e argumentação e define os gêneros básicos da retórica segundo Aristóteles, a saber, o judiciário, que versa sobre o que é justo, o deliberativo, que trata do que deve ou não ser feito em cada ocasião, e o epidíctico, que é também o gênero do discurso laudatório.

The Death Penalty's Denial of Fundamental Human Rights
The Death Penalty's Denial of Fundamental Human Rights details how capital punishment violates universal human rights-to life; to be free from torture and other forms of cruelty; to be treated in a non-arbitrary, non-discriminatory manner; and to dignity. In tracing the evolution of the world's understanding of torture, which now absolutely prohibits physical and psychological torture, the book argues that an immutable characteristic of capital punishment-already outlawed in many countries and American states-is that it makes use of death threats. Mock executions and other credible death threats, in fact, have long been treated as torturous acts. When crime victims are threatened with death and are helpless to prevent their deaths, for example, courts routinely find such threats inflict psychological torture. With simulated executions and non-lethal corporal punishments already prohibited as torturous acts, death sentences and real executions, the book contends, must be classified as torturous acts, too.

This book deals with the Press in Brazil in its historical, social and cultural context, with particular attention being paid to the strategies of printed written communication. The author reconstructs the constellation of texts into which the discursive tradition of the editorial is integrated. The emphasis is placed on the description of the features of both linguistic and extra-linguistic change and continuity which characterise leading articles published in Brazilian Portuguese in the 19th century so that the relationship between the historicity of the language and the text is impressed on the reader.
The Emergence of the Modern Language Sciences: Historiographical perspectives
Although it is widely thought that structural linguistics began abruptly with the publication of Saussure's 'revolutionary' "Course in General Linguistics," the work of E. F. K. Koerner has demonstrated that Saussure, for all his originality, remained true to the basic tenets of his 19th-century predecessors. In this volume, the development of modern linguistics before, during and after Saussure is traced in 20 studies honouring the scholar who has done more than anyone else to professionalize linguistic historiography during the last quarter century. Among the wide range of topics covered are: grammar and philosophy in the age of comparativism, the relation of Saussure's anagram studies to his theory of the linguistic sign, nationalist overtones in German linguistics from 1914 to 1945, and the true story (with newly discovered documentation) of why Chomsky's "Logical Structure of Linguistic Theory" didn't get published during the 1950s or 60s. In addition to an introductory overview of Koerner's career and a complete listing of his publications, the volume includes previously unpublished materials from Saussure's notebooks.
