Saussure's Third Course of Lectures on General Linguistics (1910-1911)
The notes taken by Saussure's student Emile Constantin were not available to the editors of the published Cours de linguistique générale (1916), and came to light only after the second world war. They have never been published in their entirety. The third and last course of lectures, of which Constantin kept this very full record, is generally considered to represent a more advanced version of Saussure's teaching than the earlier two. Bibliographie Linguistique/ Linguistic Bibliography is the annual bibliography of linguistics published by the Permanent International Committee of Linguists under the auspices of the International Council of Philosophy and Humanistic Studies of UNESCO. With a tradition of more than fifty years (the first two volumes, covering the years 1939-1947, were published in 1949-1950), Bibliographie Linguistique is by far the most comprehensive bibliography in the field. It covers all branches of linguistics, both theoretical and descriptive, from all geographical areas, including less known and extinct languages, with particular attention to the many endangered languages of the world. La diversité linguistique
La conférence sur "La diversité linguistique : défi pour les villes et régions européennes" (Rovinj, Croatie, 22-23 mars 2001) a été organisée conjointement par le Congrès des pouvoirs locaux et régionaux de l'Europe (CPLRE), le ministère de l'Intégration européenne de Croatie et le Comité des régions de l'Union européenne. Elle a constitué la contribution majeure du CPLRE à l'Année européenne des langues 2001 et a été l'occasion du lancement de cette année européenne en Croatie. Cette conférence a rassemblé environ 150 participants et a permis à de nombreux experts, mais aussi aux membres du Congrès et aux élus locaux et régionaux présents, d'échanger leurs vues sur l'apprentissage des langues. Cette conférence a permis de présenter des exemples concrets d'apprentissage des langues, qu'il s'agisse des langues de communication internationale, de la langue nationale, régionale ou minoritaire.

Setting out the historical national and religious characteristics of the Italians as they impact on the integration within the European Union, this study makes note of the two characteristics that have an adverse effect on Italian national identity: cleavages between north and south and the dominant role of family. It discusses how for Italians family loyalty is stronger than any other allegiance, including feelings towards their country, their nation, or the EU. Due to such subnational allegiances and values, this book notes that Italian civic society is weaker and engagement at the grass roots is less robust than one finds in other democracies, leaving politics in Italy largely in the hands of political parties. The work concludes by noting that EU membership, however, provides no magic bullet for Italy: it cannot change internal cleavages, the Italian worldview, and family values or the country’s mafia-dominated power matrix, and as a result, the underlying absence of fidelity to a shared polity—Italian or European—leave the country as ungovernable as ever.
The Emergence of the Modern Language Sciences
Although it is widely thought that structural linguistics began abruptly with the publication of Saussure's 'revolutionary' Course in General Linguistics, the work of E. F. K. Koerner has demonstrated that Saussure, for all his originality, remained true to the basic tenets of his 19th-century predecessors. In this volume, the development of modern linguistics before, during and after Saussure is traced in 20 studies honouring the scholar who has done more than anyone else to professionalize linguistic historiography during the last quarter century. Among the wide range of topics covered are: grammar and philosophy in the age of comparativism, the relation of Saussure's anagram studies to his theory of the linguistic sign, nationalist overtones in German linguistics from 1914 to 1945, and the true story (with newly discovered documentation) of why Chomsky's Logical Structure of Linguistic Theory didn't get published during the 1950s or 60s. In addition to an introductory overview of Koerner's career and a complete listing of his publications, the volume includes previously unpublished materials from Saussure's notebooks.
