The first English translation of the Memoirs of Marchand is "an invaluable contribution to those interested in the Napoleonic period. As Napoleon's valet, Marchand is in constant contact with the Emperor during the last ten years of his life. "Educated, discreet, and devoted", Marchand records the personal work habits, relationship with family and staff, events at the Tuileries, Waterloo, the Bellerophon, the Northumberland, and finally, the moment of death. "There is no doubt of the authenticity of these Memoirs, nor the truth of the facts which Marchand reports", states Napoleonic scholar Jean Tulard, Professor at the Sorbonne, Member of the Institute of France.
