This Sun Tai-Chi (Taijiquan) guidebook was written in 1957 by Madam Sun Jian-Yun, daughter of Great Grandmaster Sun Lu-T'ang. With over 200 photographs of Madam Sun demonstrating postures, this book is an essential photographic reference in understanding the traditional breakdown and sequence of the Sun Tai-Chi form. Bradford Tyrey, who lived in China for 13 years (1984-97), studied the Sun family arts of Tai-Chi, Bagua, and Xingyi with Madam Sun, becoming her first foreign disciple. Additionally, he had studied with many of the elders of the Sun family during those years. After returning to the United States, he continued learning from Madam Sun over the years until her passing in 2003. Thi...

The name Sun Lu Tang rings familiar to almost anyone who has studied one or more of the major "internal" styles of Chinese martial arts. Because Sun was highly skilled in Xing Yi Quan, Ba Gua Zhang, and Tai Ji Quan, he wrote five different books on these subjects and synthesized the three arts to invent Sun Style Tai Ji Quan. His name has become well known wherever Chinese martial arts are practiced. Sun Lu Tang's treatise on Xing Yi Quan, published in 1915, was his first work and it was the first book published publically in China which integrated the thories of martial arts with Chinese philosophy and Daoist Qi cultivation theories. In addition to the original text of Sun's Xing Yi Quan book, this English translation also includes a detailed biography of Sun Lu Tang and an interview with his daughter, Sun Jian Yun. Book jacket.

Print, Profit, and Perception examines the dynamic cross-cultural exchanges occurring in China and Taiwan from the first Sino-Japanese War to the mid-twentieth century. Drawing examples from various genres, this interdisciplinary volume presents nine empirically grounded case studies on the growth in the production, dissemination and consumption of texts, which lay behind a dramatic expansion of knowledge. The chapters collectively address the co-existence of globalization and localization processes in the period. By taking into account intra-Asian cultural encounters and tracing the multiple competing forces encountered by many, this book offers a fresh and compelling take on how individuals and social groups participated in transnational conceptual flows. Contributors include: Paul Bailey, Che-chia Chang, Elizabeth Emrich, Tze-ki Hon, Max K.W. Huang, Mei-e Huang, Mike Shi-chi Lan, Pei-yin Lin, and Weipin Tsai.
