Advances in Visual Computing
The two volume set LNCS 6938 and LNCS 6939 constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 7th International Symposium on Visual Computing, ISVC 2011, held in Las Vegas, NV, USA, in September 2011. The 68 revised full papers and 46 poster papers presented together with 30 papers in the special tracks were carefully reviewed and selected from more than 240 submissions. The papers of part I (LNCS 6938) are organized in computational bioimaging, computer graphics, motion and tracking, segmentation, visualization; mapping modeling and surface reconstruction, biomedical imaging, computer graphics, interactive visualization in novel and heterogeneous display environments, object detection and recognition. Part II (LNCS 6939) comprises topics such as immersive visualization, applications, object detection and recognition, virtual reality, and best practices in teaching visual computing.
Drowning in Laws
Since 1943, the lives of Brazilian working people and their employers have been governed by the Consolidation of Labor Laws (CLT). Seen as the end of an exclusively repressive approach, the CLT was long hailed as one of the world's most advanced bodies of social legislation. In Drowning in Laws, John D. French examines the juridical origins of the CLT and the role it played in the cultural and political formation of the Brazilian working class. Focusing on the relatively open political era known as the Populist Republic of 1945 to 1964, French illustrates the glaring contrast between the generosity of the CLT's legal promises and the meager justice meted out in workplaces, government ministries, and labor courts. He argues that the law, from the outset, was more an ideal than a set of enforceable regulations--there was no intention on the part of leaders and bureaucrats to actually practice what was promised, yet workers seized on the CLT's utopian premises while attacking its systemic flaws. In the end, French says, the labor laws became "real" in the workplace only to the extent that workers struggled to turn the imaginary ideal into reality.
The Unwritten Brazilian Constitution
The Unwritten Brazilian Constitution offers an unexplored topic outside Portuguese language: the leading cases on human rights in the Brazilian Supreme Court (Supremo Tribunal Federal – STF). The Brazilian Constitution of 1988 represents an institutional framework able to restructure the relationship between the powers after the military dictatorship. The constituents drafted the Brazilian Constitution in order to set an extensive system of judicial protection for fundamental rights, by means of several instruments that have strengthened access to the Judiciary. Because the Brazilian Constitution has an extensive list of fundamental rights, the STF was called to interpret them several times and it developed an unwritten understanding of these fundamental rights. These decisions are not available to the international community since they are not translated to English. Based on this gap, this original book illustrates the main rulings on human rights analyzed by great scholars in Brazil. The text presents a deep discussion regarding the characteristics of the cases and demonstrates how the STF has built the legal arguments to interpret the extension of the fundamental rights.

Décimo volume de uma série iniciada em 1980 pelo Centro Ecumênico de Documentação e Informação (CEDI) e continuada pelo Instituto Socioambiental (ISA), a presente edição do livro Povos Indígenas no Brasil (2001-2005) traz um resumo comentado das políticas indigenistas, oficiais e não-governamentais e da política propriamente indígena no período. A publicação, apoiada em uma extensa rede de colaboradores voluntários, traz 178 artigos assinados, centenas de notícias extraídas e resumidas a partir de 125 fontes, além de cerca de 200 imagens fotográficas e 36 mapas. Todas essas informações e análises estão organizadas em seis capítulos temáticos e 19 regionais, num total de 866 páginas.
