James MacMillan Studies

The Timing of Discretionary Bonuses
In a real-effort experiment, we investigate how the timing of discretionary bonuses affects the relationship between workers and managers. Average output is substantially higher if bonuses are paid in the middle rather than upfront or at the end, as workers increase first-period output to signal trustworthiness. In contrast, average output does not differ when the decision is made at the beginning or end. When the decision is made upfront, output increases after receiving a bonus but decreases substantially, if the bonus is not paid. This is consistent with negative reciprocity by workers who anticipate, but do not receive a bonus.

Network Monitoring and Punishment in Public Goods Games
We report experimental findings on the impact of network structure on decentralized monitoring and punishment in public goods games. In the environments we study, individuals can only directly monitor and punish their immediate neighbors in an exogenously determined network. We examine contributions and punishment decisions in three network environments - a Complete network, a Circle network, and an Asymmetric network. We find that average contributions are lower in the Asymmetric network, but that this result is driven entirely by the player who faces only one potential punisher. We use a laboratory experiment to investigate the extent to which leaders--faced with opportunistic incentives--employ monitoring to improve team production. Participants are assigned to teams, with one person appointed as the leader. The leader has the power to commit to a monitoring option, which replaces the default equal sharing rule with one that distributes team revenue in proportion to individual investments.
