Ecological and Environmental Physiology of Insects

Insects are the most ecologically important multicellular heterotrophs in terrestrial systems. They play critical roles in ecological food webs, remain devastating agricultural and medical pests, and represent the most diverse group of eukaryotes in terms of species numbers. Their dominant role among terrestrial heterotrophs arises from a number of key physiological traits, and in particular by the developmental and evolutionary plasticity of these traits. Ecological and Environmental Physiology of Insects presents a current and comprehensive overview of how the key physiological traits of insects respond to environmental variation. It forges conceptual links from molecular biology through organismal function to population and community ecology. As with other books in the Series, the emphasis is on the unique physiological characteristics of the insects, but with applications to questions of broad relevance in physiological ecology. As an aid to new researchers on insects, it also includes introductory chapters on the basics and techniques of insect physiology ecology.

Katja Davar works in a revived Romantic tradition, creating powerful pictures that deal with sublime subjects. This catalogue focuses on a new body of work concerned with the threat of deluge, explored by Leonardo da Vinci in his treatise on water, and the mystery and primeval beauty of marine creatures. Executed in graphite on paper the work takes the form of large drawings and animations. The catalogue will include illustrations of the drawings and animations, storyboards for two animations, and installation shots. Katja Davar was born in London and lives and works in Cologne.

Physiological Systems in Insects

Physiological Systems in Insects, Fourth Edition explores why insects have become the dominant animals on the planet. Sections describe the historical investigations that have led us to our current understanding of insect systems. Integrated within a basic physiological framework are modern molecular approaches that provide a glimpse of the genetic and evolutionary frameworks that testify to the unity of life on earth. This updated edition describes advances that have occurred in our understanding of hormone action, metamorphosis, and reproduction, along with new sections on the role of microbiomes, insecticide action and its metabolism, and a chapter on genetics, genomics and epigenetic sys...

The Impact of Culture and Faith in Dementia Care

This book provides the reader with a deeper understanding of the symptoms and palliative care needs of patients with dementia and their families. The book addresses the unique role of different cultures throughout the world and how this impacts psycho-social–spiritual healing. By looking at how patients with dementia are cared for in low-, middle-, and high-income countries, we can not only learn about cultures globally but learn from one another about unique and special models of care. Our hope is that by learning from different cultures, care for patients with dementia and their families will improve on a global scale. The book will be very useful for anyone involved in care for patients with dementia and their families, including neurologists, primary care physicians, psychiatrists, and physiotherapists, nurses, nurse practitioners, psychologists, spiritual ministry, social workers and volunteers.
