Fruto de um edital da FAPERJ, este livro surge em um momento especial, coincidindo com o Bicentenário da Independência do Brasil e o Centenário da Semana de Arte Moderna de 1922. Com a coordenação de quatro renomadas professoras de diferentes universidades públicas, é resultado de um trabalho de parceria que reforça a formação de redes interinstitucionais. Os 11 capítulos contam com a colaboração de diversos autores, provenientes de diferentes áreas de formação. O que os une é a maneira original de pensar o turismo, inserindo-o em uma perspectiva histórica. As contribuições são diversas e abrangem desde a análise do turismo como instrumento de preservação do patrimônio histórico até a não tão velada disputa entre São Paulo e Rio de Janeiro para ver qual era a cidade mais moderna e cosmopolita, isso há mais de 100 anos!
