René Heyvaert
After briefly working as an architect, René Heyvaert (1929-1984) decided to pursue a career as an artist. He saw art as essential to his life; a way of dealing with the world. Heyvaert's artistic practice is very versatile; he has created drawings, photos, mail art and sculptures in the most diverse of materials, and has also published and took part in performances. But he is best known for his work with found objects that he reinterprets through minimal interpositions. By carrying out small, poetic interventions, Heyvaert took everyday objects out of their context and stripped them of their original function. This catalogue is published on the occasion of the exhibition of the oeuvre of René Heyvaert at Museum M Leuven in the winter of 2018 and exposes on his artistic as well as architectural practice, with interviews, essays and personal reflections.00Exhibition: Museum M, Leuven, Belgium (28.09.2018-10.02.2019).
Thomas Demand
Published on the occasion of a major solo exhibition of Thomas Demand’s work at Belgium museum M Leuven in October 2020, this book focuses on Demand’s relationship to architecture and his engagement with architects over almost fifteen years. The starting point is his ongoing series ‘Model Studies’, in which the concept of the model itself is key, and includes rarely show projects such as Black Label (2009), Embassy (2007), and Nagelhaus (2008).
Jan Vercruysse
Jan Vercruysse (b. 1948, Ostend, Belgium) is one of the most influential Belgian artists. With his Tombeau series, he was internationally acknowledged in the eighties. This publication presents the most complete retrospective of this works up to now. All series that he made in the periode 1977-2009 are shown, either with a selection of images, or with the complete series. The accompanying texts by Pascal Rousseau and Jan Vercruysse are now for the first time published in an English or Dutch translation, including the interview from 1989 by Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev for Flash Art. Ravaged
The year 2014 marks the one hundredth anniversary of the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, and the beginning of the conflict that would become known as World War I. Hieronymus Cock
Hieronymus Cock (1518-1570) was an Antwerp painter and printmaker. Together with his wife, he was one of the first to establish a publishing house for prints. From 1548 their firm “At the Sign of the Four Winds” issued hundreds of important etchings and engravings. Prints after frescoes and paintings by Italian artists Raphael and Bronzino, the first series of classical ruins, antique sculpture, as well as designs by such Northern artists as Maarten van Heemskerck and Frans Floris were distributed all over Europe and helped to spread Renaissance ideals of beauty. It was Cock who spotted the talent of Pieter Bruegel, an artist who would eventually supply Cock with more than sixty designs for prints.
In Search of Utopia
2016 marks exactly 500 years since the English humanist and statesman Thomas More published in the city Leuven his world-famous book Utopia. Leuven is celebrating this milestone with a major city festival featuring exhibitions, street art, film, music, theatre, dance, literature, lectures and city walks. M Leuven
'M' is the new museum in Louvain, Belgium; a new building and a new concept.
