A comprehensive tutorial on techniques and interpreting results in experiments concerning radiation technologies such as ion implantation, ion beam mixing, etc. and the effects of radiation on thin surface layers of metals and other materials. Reviews the fundamental features of rapid nuclear analysis methods, such as Rutherford backscattering and channeling, in conjunction with changes of ion energy, ion-induced x-ray emission, and nuclear microanalysis. Also presents the results of the authors' original research into the mechanisms of damage and structural transformations in multicomponent and multilayer structures and in ion-irradiated GaAs and Ni single crystals, and the processes of defect interaction in collision cascades. Originally published in Russian in 1987. Book club price, $84. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

In the past decade, a number of orientational effects have been observed, produced by the passage of charged particles through crystals. These effects have a wide application in solid state physics, nuclear physics and the physics of hyperfine interactions. This book is not a survey but an introduction to this rapidly expanding branch of physics devoted to orientational effects and in particular to particle channelling in crystals. In it the authors discuss the interaction of charged particle beams with crystals and analyze the derivation of the fundamental equations describing this interaction. The channelling effect, the spatial redistribution of the particle flux and in the crystal lattice, and the problem of determining the position of an implanted atom in the lattice cell are also examined in detail. Student and postgraduate researchers as well as scientists and engineers working in experimental nuclear physics on the production of new materials and the physics of orientational effects, ion doping and solid state radiation physics may find this study useful.

This book offers a unique perspective and novel information on the significant contributions of Russian scientists to analytical chemistry and chemical analysis. Written by the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Analytical Chemistry, it discusses various examples of new methods and approaches originating in Russia, such as chromatography, electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry, Kumakhov X-ray optics, the Spolský effect in fluorescent analysis and important innovations in mass spectrometry, which are already widely used. Other original developments, such as the chromatomembrane and stoichiographic methods, are on their way to international recognition. Tremendous expertise in the analysis of minerals and high-purity and special-purpose substances has accumulated in Russian laboratories, and as such this book appeals to anyone interested in the development of science in Russia; to physicists, chemists, and other specialists dealing with chemical analysis; and to postgraduates and students of chemistry-related disciplines.

The book ?Channeling 2008?, Charged and Neutral Particles Channeling Phenomena, is formed by the same title conference contributions. This volume includes papers by leading researchers from different world centers. Their recent results on the coherent phenomena of charged and neutral particles propagating through the structures of various sizes and periodicities are included here, along with historical reviews by pioneers of coherent bremsstrahlung and channeling radiation as well as crystal channeling collimation.
