The British Library has good collections of 19th and 20th-century academic publications, historical material, literature, ethnography and the arts form Macedonia. Most significant Macedonian authors are represented in the Library's holdings. An energetic acquisitions policy in the past and present has led to a very good collection of books, periodicals and newspapers from Macedonia. Special attention is currently being devoted to the Balkan Crisis and to the problems of political change in Macedonia after Tito's Yugoslavia, covering the issues of civil wars, genocide, ethnic cleansing, human rights, refugees, war crimes, and peace conferences and Macedonia's involvement in them.

The Macedonian Problem

Excerpt from The Macedonian Problem: And Its Proper Solution The Object of this book is not to advocate the cause of any particular race or nation in their strug gle to mould the future destiny of Macedonia. On the contrary, in view of the conflicting pretensions of the Balkan States, as well as the unjust designs of the greater Powers of Europe with respect to the ultimate apportionment of this province, it is assumed that the most equitable solution of this problem would be to enforce Gladstone's memorable dictum Macedonia for the Macedonians. This principle once espoused, it becomes necessary to discuss the preliminary steps whereby it may be realized. The first step in this direction wo...

Historical Dictionary of the Republic of Macedonia

Located at the very heart of the Balkans, the Republic of Macedonia has a rich and turbulent history, which reflects all the complexities of the region's past and present-day politics. In the late 19th and the early 20th century, it became the focal point of competition by the fledgling Balkan nation-states over the declining Ottoman Empire's European possessions. Late Ottoman Macedonia was a region, which impressed the external observer with its diversity: ethnic, religious, linguistic, clannish, and territorial identities all overlapped in a complex and puzzling mosaic. It is this diversity that has led to the Macedonian Question of the late 19th and early 20th centuries and continues to r...

The first English-language monograph on ancient Macedonia in almost thirty years, Carol J. King's book provides a detailed narrative account of the rise and fall of Macedonian power in the Balkan Peninsula and the Aegean region during the five-hundred-year period of the Macedonian monarchy from the seventh to the second century BCE. King draws largely on ancient literary sources for her account, citing both contemporary and later classical authors. Material evidence from the fields of archaeology, epigraphy, and numismatics is also explored. Ancient Macedonia balances historical evidence with interpretations—those of the author as well as other historians—and encourages the reader to engage closely with the source material and the historical questions that material often raises. This volume will be of great interest to both under- and post-graduate students, and those looking to understand the fundamentals of the period.
