The Bloodiest Prison Uprising in US Penal History provides lessons for present-day institutions involved in American corrections. This is the untold story of the man in charge, who was intimately involved in the bloody prison uprising, and how he later suffered the politics of the uprising. Nominated as Secretary of Corrections two days before the New Mexico State Prison near Santa Fe exploded with violence on February 2, 1980, author Adolph B. Saenz was deeply involved in ending the prison insurrection, but not until thirty-three inmates died and more than two hundred others were injured. The murdered inmates and their killers are identified, along with the corrections and state officials who were involved in the prison debacle. The problems and politics of dealing with a mass prison uprising are described in graphic detail, even as the book resonates with present situations and problems in American prisons.
Anti-idiotype antibodies in cancer treatment
Actively induced immunotherapy is one of the most promising fields in cancer research and numerous approaches are being studied to design effective cancer vaccines. Among the treatment strategies to develop an effective immune response against tumor associated antigens is the use of anti idiotype (Ab2) mAb as antigen surrogates. Several studies in animal models have demonstrated the efficacy of these vaccines for triggering the immune system to induce specific and protective immunity against tumors of different origin. In fact, anti-idiotypic mAbs have been used successfully in cancer therapeutics to overcome the poor immunogenicity of some tumor-associated antigens, in particular those of non-protein origin. In some clinical trials, including patients with different tumors, anti-Id specific humoral and/or cellular responses following immunization were associated with improved clinical outcome. This number of Frontiers will be dedicated to anti- idiotypic antibodies and their use in cancer treatment. Different article types will be considered: original contributions, case reports, methods, hypothesis and theory, reviews, historical, etc.
Language, Migration and Multilingualism in the Age of Digital Humanities
Located at the intersection of humanities and applied informatics, the fledgling discipline of Digital Humanities is bringing new impulses to the field of (Romance) linguistics. Those are especially productive in the context of migration and heteroglossic practices, which encounter constraining language ideologies in Western societies. The aim of this volume is to critically reflect on both the usefulness and limitations of digitization in different areas and superdiverse contexts of the Spanish-speaking world.
