This edited volume studies the logic of community formation and the common view of the past to show how various social bonds of communities functioned during the modern national era of East-Central Europe from the late eighteenth century until today and how multifaceted this group-building really was. Through an overview of selected examples of communities in East-Central European urban centres, mainly the territories of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and its successor empires, the volume shows the potential of re-interpretation or adaptation of the past as a crucial tool for assuring social cohesion and for strengthening the image of group boundaries. It studies not only textual sources...
The modern nation is an organisational form of society that has undergone numerous changes throughout history. The concept of the nation in Europe in the nineteenth century has been posed and answered in the past, but, as the basic conditions of its existence change, it is essential that this important question be asked again. Without doubt, the modern nation realizes the promises of solidarity and community which are so attractive to the masses, and has a profound effect on identity formation. Without these structures originally put in place by civil society, self-organization as the implementation of national thought is unimaginable. Understanding the necessity and the possibility of the designability of society through the idea of nation and the functionality of civil society determines the strength and stability of the national movement.
The volume explores the cultural legacy of Nicolaus Copernicus, spanning from the 16th century to the commemorative events of 2023. It innovatively examines the reception of Copernicus’ research and ideas, tracing his cultural impact across various historical epochs. Contributions within delve into the scientific reception of his theories as well as diverse forms of cultural remembrance, including monuments and commemorations, political memory, visual arts, iconography, street names, postage stamps, and tourism promotion. Emphasizing the importance of Copernicus within both Polish and German cultural spheres (including local cultural wars), the volume also considers his broader global influence.

The Destruction of Jewish Cemeteries in Poland offers a comprehensive examination of the history of Jewish cemeteries in Poland, shedding light on an overlooked aspect of Holocaust history. Beginning with the settlement of Jewish communities in Poland, the book covers the establishment and subsequent destruction of over 1,200 Jewish cemeteries within the country's present borders. Krzysztof Bielawski draws on meticulous research and firsthand experience to explore the complex dynamics behind the destruction, exposing the roles played by various actors. Through a detailed analysis of texts, iconographic sources, and archival materials, the book not only documents the destruction but also seeks to identify the perpetrators, challenging common misconceptions and offering a nuanced perspective on this dark chapter in history. Wyobrażenia liberalne i zasady myśli wstecznej, konkurując z sobą, określiły od pierwszych lat XIX stulecia wyjątkowe cechy życia politycznego w prowincji pruskiej; ich początkom poświęciłam swą książkę „Was heißt liberal?” Opozycja polityczna w Prusach Wschodnich w pierwszej połowie XIX w. (do 1847 r.). Program i działalność (Toruń 1998), jej tematyczną i problemową kontynuacją jest obecnie prezentowane opracowanie. Kontynuacja nie oznacza jednak identyczności ujęcia procesu politycznego i wprowadzenia, à rebours wobec rozważań nad podstawami myśli liberalnej, podobnych, poświęconych porewolucyjnemu konserwatyzmowi. To nie projekt intelektualny, czy to l...
