This book is a collection of studies about forms of address in the world’s languages, with a focus on contrast and difference. The individual chapters highlight inter- and intralinguistic variation in the expression of address and its sociol-cultural functions across media, registers, geographical contexts and time – in more than 15 languages. The volume showcases the variety of approaches that exists in current address research, including the breadth of contrastive methodologies harnessing surveys and questionnaires, focus group discussions, corpus linguistics, discourse and conversation analysis to offer complementary perspectives on culture-specific address practice. This volume is for students and researchers of address and social interaction in a range of disciplines in the humanities and social sciences, including various sub-disciplines of linguistics (such as contrastive, variational and intercultural pragmatics, sociolinguistics, and morphology) and intercultural communication, as well as experts in individual languages and qualitative sociologists.
Requests in Film Dialogue and Dubbing Translation
This volume is the first to give an account of speech act pragmatics and (im)politeness in film conversation and in dubbing translation, with a focus on requests. The scope of the book is twofold: on the one hand, it describes the pragmatic features of requests in English and Italian film dialogue, while, on the other, it reveals patterns and trends concerning their translation into dubbed Italian. The first part of the volume appeals to scholars in cross-cultural pragmatics and film conversation. Differences and similarities in requestive behaviour are investigated in a comparative perspective between the two film languages, while the pragmatic features typifying requests in film speech are analysed against features typifying requests in spontaneous conversation. The second section of the book will appeal to translation scholars, since it provides an insight into how the pragmatics and the (im)politeness of requests travel across languages in the translation process, thus contributing to the largely under-researched relationship between pragmatics and translation studies.
Language Change in the 20th Century
Language Change in the 20th Century: Exploring micro-diachronic evolutions in Romance languages examines the distinctive features that set the study of the 20th century apart from preceding periods. With a primary focus on Romance languages, including Spanish, Italian, French, and Portuguese, the book advocates for the adoption of innovative methodologies to enhance the nuanced retrieval of research data: the use of speaker’s attitudes questionnaires, apparent time constructions, and S-curves. Additionally, new materials are addressed as diachronic data sources: mass-media recordings from radio and TV, colloquial conversations, and sociolinguistic corpora. Results focus on the evolution of discourse markers, address terms, as well as on the influence of specific processes such as colloquialization or external mechanisms on the language changes developed during this period. In sum, the 20th century is presented in this book as a new strand in diachronic studies, rather than another time span.
Recent Trends in Translation Studies
This volume offers a snapshot of current perspectives on translation studies within the specific historical and socio-cultural framework of Anglo-Italian relations. Care Communication
This book studies communication in institutional eldercare. It is based on audio-recorded interactions between residents and staff in a Japanese care facility. The focus is on the morning care routines, which include getting the residents out of bed and ready for the day. Combining quantitative and qualitative methods, the analysis explores the characteristics of care communication as they become manifest in the interactional small print. Topics include the use of terms of address and formal speech, the basic organisation of openings and closings, the difficulties of talking while working—and, at times, working while talking—and tempo differences between residents and staff as they move along between bed and breakfast. The research findings are contextualised with results from previous studies, tracing significant features and explanation for deviant cases. The author is a trained linguist and certified nursing assistant with first-hand working experience in institutional eldercare.
English Classics in Audiovisual Translation

Analyzing Greek talk-in-interaction incorporates ten studies which focus on Greek Conversation Analysis (CA). Although still new, research on Greek talk-in-interaction is promising and pointing in many directions. This volume’s contribution is to fill in a bibliographical gap in Greek linguistics and in the field of talk-in-interaction by offering a book dedicated to studies on several aspects of talk-in-interaction, seen from a conversation analytic perspective. The studies included in the current volume have been selected mainly on the basis of their content since the intention is to cover a wide spectrum of topics in Greek talk-in-interaction. The ten chapters are grouped into thematic categories and are presented in the following four sections: (a) grammar and interaction; (b) reporting small stories; (c) analysis of code mixing and switching; (d) mobile and Facebook talk from a conversation analytic perspective.
