Lehrmedien der Kunstgeschichte

  • Categories: Art

Beiträge u.a. von Alexandra Axtmann, Peter Bell, Matthias Bruhn, Bernd Carqué, Ortwin Dally, Ute Dercks, Philipp Goldbach, Erkki Huhtamo, Joseph Imorde, Rossella Monaco, Hubert Locher, Maria Männig, Susanne Müller-Bechtel, Robert S. Furniture as trophy

  • Categories: Art

Around the middle of the 19th century, so called 'antler furniture' was often found in Alpine hunting lodges. These 'trophies' made from hunted animals are seen today as an aberration of rustic conviviality. In modern settings animal materials have also been used ranging from classics of modern interior design from the 1920s that use animal fur as upholstery to ironic antler furniture pastiches from the 1980s, and the application of animal materials for furniture-like objects in contemporary art and design. 'The field of zoology has long supplied the arts and crafts sector with a plethora of sundry materials. The numerous antlers and horns are to be mentioned primarily in this context, which do not merely fill all of the hunting lodges and other houses belonging to keen huntsman but are also to be encountered in the homes of people who have never held a rifle, and at best know how to carve a haunch of venison with the necessary respect.' Hora H

The Dresden collection's singular group of Rembrandt works - about 20 drawings attributed to the master today and the nearly complete oeuvre of etchings- will provide the basis for this remarkable publication. It will have a particular focus on Rembrandt's narrative compositions, printed self-portraits, studies of his wife Saskia, and will include works from all periods of his oeuvre plus prints and drawings by artists from his workshop and followers. The list of artists who understood Rembrandt as a dynamic authority and source of inspiration is long, reaching from his immediate followers to masters of the 18th century, from Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione to Jonathan Richardson to the kindr...

Strengthening Communities with Neighborhood Data

Efforts to address the problems of distressed urban neighborhoods stretch back to the 1800s, but until relatively recently, data played little role in forming policy. It wasn't until the early 1990s that all of the factors necessary for rigorous, multifaceted analysis of neighborhood conditions--automated government records, geospatial information systems, and local organizations that could leverage both--converged. Strengthening Communities documents that convergence and details its progress, plotting the ways data are improving local governance in America.

Rubens, Rembrandt, and Drawing in the Golden Age

  • Categories: Art

An extraordinary history of Netherlandish drawing, focused on the training and skill of artists during the long 17th century With a lively narrative thread and thematic chapters, this book offers an exceptional introduction to Dutch and Flemish drawing during the long 17th century. Victoria Sancho Lobis discusses the many roles of drawing in artistic training, its function in the production of works in other media, and its emergence as a medium in its own right. Beautifully illustrated with some 120 drawings by artists including Rembrandt van Rijn, Peter Paul Rubens, Hendrick Goltzius, Gerrit von Honthorst, and Jacob De Gheyn, this book surveys current methodologies of studying these works and features a brief history of Dutch papermaking and watermarks as well as a glossary. Paying careful attention to materials and techniques, and informed by recent conservation treatments, Lobis explains how to look at these drawings as records of experimentation and skill, true windows into the artist’s mind.

"In 2012 a hitherto unknown 'Eyckian' drawing of the Crucifixion was exhibited in The Road to Van Eyck in Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. Forty years earlier Wim Hofman, a psychiatrist and art collector from Groningen, had bought the drawing - as a reproduction - for just ten guilders at a local estate auction. He was convinced, however, and rightly so, that it was an original work of art, and he spent the rest of his life researching it. The Rotterdam museum acquired the drawing shortly after the exhibition. In this book leading specialists examine various aspects of this mysterious drawing - its discovery, the scientific and technical research into the materials, and the identity of the artist. Is it a work by Jan van Eyck himself or a workshop assistant, or is it a late fifteenth-century copy of a work by the famous progenitor of Netherlandish painting?"--Back cover.
