A Community at the Heart of Europe
Nestled in the heart of the “Old Continent”, along the border between Slovenia and the Italian region of Friuli Venezia Giulia, Slovenes in Italy form one of Europe’s national minorities. This volume presents an up-to-date overview of their efforts to preserve their cultural and linguistic heritage and distinctiveness. The Slovene national community in Italy has been affected by profound and at times devastating events, including both World Wars, the fascist period and the lengthy process of defining the border between Italy and Yugoslavia. The collapse of the Berlin Wall, Slovenia’s declaration of independence and the process of globalisation have provided the community with new forms of protection, but also presented it with further challenges associated with adopting its development guidelines. This book is dedicated to researchers on ethnic studies, civil rights activists and politicians dealing with minority and human rights and diversity management, as well as tourists, teachers and students.

Language and Culture in the Intercultural World
The intensification of contacts between cultures and languages has a major impact on all social spheres today. Multiculturalism and multilingualism are important elements of the local, regional, national and global community. Much of the world’s conflict stems from the contrast between globalization and nationalism, fuelled by religions, racial divisions, traditions and other cultural particularities. Focusing mainly on the situation in Central and South-eastern Europe, this book addresses how cultural identities develop through tourism, education, literature and other social fields, and how language and literature teaching should be planned in this context. It consists of the following sections: Language, Culture and Tourism; Interculturalism, Multilingualism and Approaches to Language Learning; and Culture in Literature and Translation. The volume will be of interest to teachers and researchers of cultural and tourism studies, linguistics and language learning, literary studies and translation, while also addressing wider readers interested in contemporary intercultural society.
Silences and Divided Memories
The Istrian Peninsula, which is made up of modern-day Croatia, Slovenia, and Italy suffered from the so-called "Istrian exodus" after the Second World War. This book looks at this difficult, silenced past and shifts the usual focus from migrants to those who stayed behind and to the new immigrants who came to the “emptied” towns.The research, based on individual memories, deals with silences and competing national discourses, reasons to stay and leave, hybrid border ethnic identities, and the renewal of Istrian society and its new social relations. It is a self-critical reflection on an ignored chapter of national history, which, with an empathetic approach, allows the silence to speak.

Knjiga je zasnovana kot zbirka prispevkov o znanstvenicah, ki so svojo znanstveno disciplino premaknile »korak naprej«. S tem imamo v mislih raziskovalke, profesorice, inovatorke, avtorice pomembnega znanstvenega preboja ali odkritja, patenta, ali pa znanstvenice, ki so v svoje znanstveno področje uvedle novo prakso in metodologijo, ustanovile inštitut oziroma oddelek, ali pa vzpostavile pogoje za razvoj novih znanstvenih disciplin. Profesionalne biografije 27 žensk predstavljenih v tej knjigi odkrijejo veliko več plasti tega kaj ukavrjanje z znanostjo dejansko zaobjema. Znanstveni prispevek žensk je prikazan skozi zgodbe o njihovem delu in življenju, ker profesionalno/javno nikoli ni ločeno od zasebnega/intimnega. Vprašanje kdo raziskuje nikoli ni ločeno od tega kaj oz. kateri predmet raziskuje in kako to počne. Eseji pripovedujejo zgodbo tudi o širšem družbenem prispevku, ki so ga znanstvenice pustile za sabo, ki gre bistveno onkraj ozko razumljenega znanstvenega dela. Tako knjiga želi prispevati tudi spreminjanju razumevanja kaj znanost je, kot proces ustvarjanja vednosti in znanja, kot človeško delo, družbena praksa in poslanstvo.
