A BOOK ABOUT CATARACTS FOR PEOPLE WITH CATARACTS. NO COMPLEX MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY! - from one of America's Most Compassionate Doctors, Dr. David Richardson Why YOU NEED This Cataract Surgery Book It's a curious thing. People with cataracts often have very poor vision, making it difficult for them to read. And yet, their physicians typically ask them to sift through stacks of educational pamphlets and paperwork on cataracts. The documents are often single-spaced with small print and thin margins - in short, a nightmare for someone with cataracts. What's more, the information is oozing with hard-to-understand medical jargon and procedural terminology. I really want my cataract patients to have ...
New cataract removal techniques, anesthesia and viscoelastic substances, and the implantation of modern intraocular lenses are essential topics in the fast developing field of ophthalmic surgery. This publication provides a comprehensive update discussing these items thoroughly. Special emphasis is given to the management of mature cataract and phacoemulsification in the vitreous cavity. Intraocular lens calculation is highlighted by optical coherence biometry, in particular, the measurements to increase the predictability of intraocular lens implantation. Implantation techniques, incision architecture and wound construction as well as Scheimpflug-photography of foldable intraocular lenses and the prevention of PCO (posterior capsular opacification) are covered. The last two articles emphasize the implantation of special intraocular lenses including piggyback intraocular lens and multifocal intraocular lens implantation. Anterior eye segment surgeons looking for an update on modern cataract surgery will find a wealth of timely information on new techniques and results in small incision cataract surgery in this publication.
Cataract is currently the main cause of avoidable blindness in the developing world and accounts for about 75% of cases worldwide. Small incision manual techniques for cataract surgery, as described in this book, should be in the armamentarium of every cataract surgeon, whether it be in the United States or less affluent countries. This book is the first to summarize the current knowledge of the cell biology of lens epithelial cells in relation to and in the development of posterior capsular opacification (PCO). PCO remains the most common long-term complication of modern cataract surgery, occurring months or years after cataract surgery, unlike most other complications that tend to arise during or soon after the procedure. Opacification of the posterior capsule appears to be linked to lens epithelial cells that are left behind in the eye during cataract removal. These cells proliferate, migrate across the posterior lens capsule, and undergo changes that result in fibrous or pearl-type opacities in the capsule. The first section of the text explains the molecular mechanism and biology of lens epithelial cells that lead to the incidence of PCO. In the second part, in addition to a description of the mechanism and pathological condition of PCO, surgical methods and devices for preventing PCO are discussed in detail. Lens Epithelium and Capsular Opacification will benefit not only young clinical residents and junior researchers, but also established faculty in the clinical or basic academic field.

Ophthalmologists are experiencing an increasing need for information on viscoelastics, as the number of surgical procedures requiring these materials increases annually. This resource text contains over 36 chapters covering all aspects of viscoelastics, including their use in the corneal reflective, glaucoma, vitreoretinal and strabismus surgeries. Other topics include viscoelstic materials, cateract extraction, phacoemulsification, and more.
