Vienna. A Guide to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites

Vienna's historical center was recently named a UNESCO World Heritage landmark, and Manfred Wehdorn's new guide takes the visitor on a tour of the historical streets and busy urban squares as well as the quiet hidden courtyards that make Vienna unique. This architecturally and culturally rich metropolis comes alive as the stories behind the buildings and palacesnbsp;-- their builders, architects, and often illustrious inhabitantsnbsp;-- are revealed in Wehdorn's illuminating text. The guide itself is a useful and systematic compendium containing fifty maps that make navigating the city and locating the individual sites a breeze. For anyone interested in, or planning to visit, this beloved European capital, Vienna: A City Guide is essential reading.

The majority of books in English on historic building conservation and heritage preservation training are often restricted to Western architecture and its origins. Consequently, the history of building conservation, the study of contemporary paradigms and case studies in most universities and within wider interest circles, predominantly in the UK, Europe, and USA focus mainly on Europe and sometimes the USA, although the latter is often excluded from European publications. With an increasingly multicultural student body in Euro-American universities and with a rising global interest in heritage preservation, there is an urgent need for publications to cover a larger geographical and social a...

This book uses the Historic Urban Landscape - the most recently codified notion of international urban heritage conservation - to demonstrate why it is necessary to demarcate history from cultural heritage and what consequences the increasing popularity of the latter have on history. It also demonstrates how the history of cultural heritage can be constructed as a historical problem. First, the conceptual history of urban heritage preservation – based on the standard setting instruments of international organizations – reveals the fundamental elements of the current concept of urban heritage. Second, this concept, as worded in the HUL approach, is investigated through the analysis of Vienna, which played a crucial role in the establishment of HUL. These examples are used to to show how the evolution of cultural heritage can be constructed as a historical problem.

Cities and Cultural Landscapes

Places are locations of value where psychological and cultural needs are satisfied. Human relationships with particular environments play a key role in motivating, developing, and nurturing the life of societies. Undifferentiated space becomes ‘place’ as we understand it better and its built and natural forms become endowed with value. However, misunderstanding the critical importance of heritage locations, particularly based on rejection of local and regional distinctiveness, has often led to their destruction. Featuring essays from across central Europe and beyond, and aimed at practitioners, decision makers and concerned citizens alike, this book raises awareness about the responsibility that we bear for every action taken that modifies the formal and socio-cultural context. Potentially, these actions can negatively impact the cultural landscape. Learning to recognize the essential value of heritage to the ‘place-ness’ of our cities and landscapes is vital in helping us to preserve and enjoy their intrinsic beauty and cultural importance.
