Wasted Education

An urgent reality check for America’s blinkered fixation on STEM education. We live in an era of STEM obsession. Not only do tech companies dominate American enterprise and economic growth while complaining of STEM shortages, but we also need scientific solutions to impending crises. As a society, we have poured enormous resources—including billions of dollars—into cultivating young minds for well-paid STEM careers. Yet despite it all, we are facing a worker exodus, with as many as 70% of STEM graduates opting out of STEM work. Sociologist John D. Skrentny investigates why, and the answer, he shows, is simple: the failure of STEM jobs. Wasted Education reveals how STEM work drives away bright graduates as a result of “burn and churn” management practices, lack of job security, constant training for a neverending stream of new—and often socially harmful—technologies, and the exclusion of women, people of color, and older workers. Wasted Education shows that if we have any hope of improving the return on our STEM education investments, we have to change the way we’re treating the workers on whom our future depends.

The strategy of the British and French prior to World War II was to preserve the status quo after the disaster of World War I. Donald Stoker's book examines British and French involvement from 1919 to 1939 in the creation and development of the naval forces of Poland, Finland and the three Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. This is an in-depth scholarly study of a subject that should appeal to students of international history, strategy, international relations and naval history in general.

Laboratory Techniques in Cellular and Molecular Medicine

The methodological book ""Laboratory techniques in cellular and molecular medicine"" is intended for students of bachelor, master, and doctoral study programmes at faculties of science, medicine, and veterinary medicine, as well as for laboratory technicians interested in methodological approaches of contemporary cellular and molecular medicine. The book does not aim to provide a comprehensive overview of the current state of the art in cellular and molecular medicine, that would be a superhuman task. The aim of the 56-member author team is to provide readers with an overview of the methods established and tested at the Institute of Molecular and Translational Medicine of the Faculty of Medi...

Global Nuclear Disarmament

The DPG was chosen as a research institution to assist in the deliberations of the International Commission on Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament, constituted by the Australian and Japanese governments. The support of the NTI to DPG's efforts has been immense and definitive. The first decade of 21st century has seen a resurgence of support for global nuclear disarmament. A cascade of nuclear disarmament proposal has emerged from different sources. India has consistently favored complete global nuclear disarmament, even as it laid the foundations of a nuclear energy programme. Notwithstanding the nuclear tests, Indian policy on global nuclear disarmament has not been disavowed. Global ...

The Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe

This work examines the CFE Treaty as a factor in Russia’s foreign and security policy. Moscow showed amazing persistence in their relationship with the "cornerstone of European security." Their approach to the treaty was a genuine attempt to shape the security environment in Europe and the former USSR. The treaty also enabled the dismantling of large conventional forces as they returned from Eastern Europe and transitioned into the armies of the newly independent states of the former USSR. The CFE Treaty, though, proved ineffective at constraining the enlargement of NATO. Simultaneously, Moscow’s foreign and security policy evolved from one that focused on the domestic development of the...
