Scanning Probe Microscopy: Characterization, Nanofabrication and Device Application of Functional Materials

As the characteristic dimensions of electronic devices continue to shrink, the ability to characterize their electronic properties at the nanometer scale has come to be of outstanding importance. In this sense, Scanning Probe Microscopy (SPM) is becoming an indispensable tool, playing a key role in nanoscience and nanotechnology. SPM is opening new opportunities to measure semiconductor electronic properties with unprecedented spatial resolution. SPM is being successfully applied for nanoscale characterization of ferroelectric thin films. In the area of functional molecular materials it is being used as a probe to contact molecular structures in order to characterize their electrical propert...

Language and Intercultural Competence Education in a Global Age

This book examines the essential connection between language learning and intercultural competence. The book explores teaching strategies, pedagogical frameworks, and real-world applications to emphasize the importance of language diversity and intercultural dialogue. The first chapter presents a study on enhancing intercultural competence in English for Specific Purposes (ESP), highlighting the role of reflective and practical activities. The subsequent chapters delve into university-industry collaboration, interdisciplinary learning in higher education, teacher training programs, and the promotion of plurilingual competence through English education. Additionally, the book reviews intercul...

Reporting on human capital (24-25 June, 1999). Agora VI was the occasion of spirited but fruitful debate, especially between those who favour 'human capital accountancy' and those who prefer 'human resources management'. This Agora did not reach a clear consensus but revealed that the 'human capital accountancy' point of view, which centres its analysis on measuring the return on investment in human capital - an interesting concept in its own right - has given way to more political concepts, concerned with how human capital in enterprises can be accurately described and evaluated in order to maintain and raise quality.

Paid employment continues to be at the heart of individual and collective life. Working and training time are part of social time. To this we should add less clearly defined times, such as the time devoted to family life, relaxation, leisure, etc. An examination of the relationship between working time and training time should not be constrained by the key conoept of classical drama, i.e. the unity of time, place and action. In reality we learn all the time, everywhere, in different ways, at different rhythms and in different patterns. Work itself has changed considerably, demanding a strong capacity for innovation and the ability to transfer knowledge from one set of circumstances to another. The traditional model has been replaced by other approaches, emphasising greater flexibility in work relations, a less linear structuring of social time and a new way of looking at the mutual responsibilities of employers and employees (especially the notion of co-investment). In order to explore the issue, three points are examined here: Work and training in the 21st century; working time and incompany vs. extramural training time; working and training time throughout life.

Polymer Science Insights

This volume of Macromolecular Symposia contains chapters dedicated to different aspects of modern polymer science. Highly skilled researchers produced texts with detailed information on several subjects, such as, hybrid materials, detection of electric charges trapped in polymer systems, supramolecular structures in rubber blends, compatibilization of elastomer-based blends, rubber/organoclay nano-composites, new stereospecific catalysts and conductive polymer blends. Most of these subjects are extremely new and likely to appear in polymer textbooks only in the latter part of the 21st century.
