„Sozomena“ bedeutet auf Griechisch „Gerettetes“. Die Reihe widmet sich der Erschließung von Texten, die aus der griechischen und römischen Antike nur durch ausserordentliche Fund-Umstände erhalten geblieben sind - allen voran durch Papyri, von denen Tausende in Universitäten und Bibliotheken unentziffert vorhanden sind. Die Reihe soll hauptsächlich Texte edieren und interpretieren, aber auch die Methoden der Erschließung diskutieren. Verschiedene Buchtypen werden daher hier veröffentlicht: Texteditionen, Kommentare, Monographien und Sammelbände. Die Hauptsprache der Publikationen ist Englisch, daneben auch Deutsch und Italienisch. Herausgegeben werden die Sozomena von Alessandro Barchiesi (Harvard, MA), Robert Fowler (Bristol), Dirk Obbink (Oxford und Ann Arbor, MI) und Nigel Wilson (Oxford) im Namen der Herculaneum Society, die zur Förderung der Erschließung des wichtigsten Fundkomplexes antiker Papyri gegründet wurde: der Villa dei Papiri im Pompeji benachbarten antiken Herculaneum mit ihren zum Teil noch nicht ausgegrabenen Schätzen an Textrollen.
Adespota Papyracea Hexametra Graeca
This volume contains editions of a collection of the anonymous hexametrical texts on papyri in the form of a bibliographical catalog, many of which were published in summary form more than a century ago and are no longer available. Also including translations and a short commentary, the book sheds new light on unattributed compositions from Hellenistic, Imperial and Early Byzantime times and their circulation in Graeco-Roman Egypt.
Adespota Papyracea Hexametra Graeca
The volume consists of a comprehensive catalogue of hexametric adespota texts transmitted on papyri. Each entry contains: publication name; indication of content; correspondences with the online catalogues Mertens-Pack3 and Leuven Database of Ancient Books; date, provenance and current location; previous editions available; previously suggested attributions; updated bibliography. The book also incorporates re-editions with translation and commentary of a selection of anonymous hexameter papyri, including new readings and textual conjectures significantly advancing our understanding of a large variety of texts ranging from epic to astronomical poems. Adespota Papyracea Hexametra Graeca updates and integrates previous collections of unattributed hexameter texts such as the hexametric sylloge in Lloyd-Jones and Parsons' Supplementum Hellenisticum (nos. 901-956) and the recent catalogue in Miguelez-Cavero's Poems in Context (nos.1.-33).
The Venetian Qur'an
An anonymous book appeared in Venice in 1547 titled L'Alcorano di Macometto, and, according to the title page, it contained "the doctrine, life, customs, and laws [of Mohammed] . . . newly translated from Arabic into the Italian language." Were this true, L'Alcorano di Macometto would have been the first printed direct translation of the Qur'an in a European vernacular language. The truth, however, was otherwise. Fakes and Forgers of Classical Literature
Right from the beginning, classical literature has been embroiled with questions of authenticity, fakes, frauds, and, of course, scandal. Issues of dubious authorship, and contested authority confront philologists, critics and publishers today as surely as they did in the classical era itself. The new era of postmodernism, however, encourages us to look at the work of the forger with fresh eyes, and recent scholarship reflects this in an interdisciplinary approach which goes well beyond the conventional academic endeavor to separate the authentic from the fake. Fakes and Forgers of Classical Literature comprises essays from an international cast of scholars who, in their diverse and creative approaches to questions of authenticity both old and new, radically revise the position of the forged text in the literary tradition and, in light of modern approaches of philology and literary criticism, offer exciting new strategies for understanding forgery and the play with authenticity within ancient literature itself.
