This work reports on research into intelligent systems, models, and architectures for educational computing applications. It covers a wide range of advanced information and communication and computational methods applied to education and training.
ITS 2000 is the fifth international conference on Intelligent Tutoring Systems. The preceding conferences were organized in Montreal in 1988, 1992, and 1996. These conferences were so strongly supported by the international community that it was decided to hold them every two years. ITS’98 was organized by Carol Redfield and Valerie Shute and held in San Antonio, Texas. The program committee included members from 13 countries. They received 140 papers (110 full papers and 30 young researchers papers) from 21 countries. As with any international conference whose proceedings serve as a reference for the field, the program committee faced the demanding task of selecting papers from a particul...

The field of Artificial Intelligence in Education includes research and researchers from many areas of technology and social science. This study aims to open opportunities for the cross-fertilization of information and ideas from researchers in the many fields that make up this interdisciplinary research area.
Personalized and adaptive systems employ user models to adapt content, services, interaction or navigation to individual users’ needs. User models can be inferred from implicitly observed information, such as the user’s interaction history or current location, or from explicitly entered information, such as user profile data or ratings. Applications of personalization include item recommendation, location-based services, learning assistance and the tailored selection of interaction modalities. With the transition from desktop computers to mobile devices and ubiquitous environments, the need for adapting to changing contexts is even more important. However, this also poses new challenges concerning privacy issues, user control, transparency, and explainability. In addition, user experience and other human factors are becoming increasingly important. This book describes foundations of user modeling, discusses user interaction as a basis for adaptivity, and showcases several personalization approaches in a variety of domains, including music recommendation, tourism, and accessible user interfaces.
This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the Second International Conference on Adaptive Hypermedia and Adaptive Web-Based Systems, AH 2002, held in Malaga, Spain, in May 2002. The 33 revised full papers and 23 short papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 109 submissions. Also included are three invited contributions, 30 posters, and 5 presentations given at the associated doctoral constortium. Among the topics covered are adaptive hypertext and hypermedia, user modeling, adaptive learning, adaptive tutoring systems, information retrieval, educational hypermedia systems, Web adaption, adaptive navigation, adaption and personalization.
This volume provides a stage for an extensive exploration of the interface between medicine, law and other disciplines or professions. It offers the reader opportunities to understand how this integrative, interactive interdisciplinary process can be examined through the lenses of language, discourse and communication. Contributions cover cross-wise issues raised by paradigmatic cases of bioethics and law, nursing ethics and law, pharmacy ethics and law, bioethics and religion, risk management and ethics, social inclusion and bioethics, and environmental ethics.
