Stalemate
Stalemate reveals the history and contemporary politics of the United Wa State Army (UWSA), Asia's strongest insurgent army on Myanmar's border with China. This ethnographic tale recounts how a highland group, often dismissed as rebels or narcotraffickers, maintains a relational autonomy between two powerful lowland states. The Wa polity engages rather than evades these surrounding states, yet struggles to fit into their registers of sovereignty and statehood. Andrew Ong examines political culture among Wa elites and people, UWSA external relations, and capital flows with neighboring China, showing how Wa autonomy is enacted through careful navigation of complex borderland geopolitics and the shadow economy. He analyzes the seeming stalemate between the Myanmar state and the UWSA as one of tactical dissonance—adopting simultaneous postures of authority and subordination and creating disruptions and connections. Stalemate illuminates how seemingly ambiguous and disorderly practices of political signaling, economic regulation, and military governance produce relative stability, challenging our assumptions about state-like processes at the peripheries.

Studying Mathematics
This book is dedicated to preparing prospective college students for the study of mathematics. It can be used at the end of high school or during the first year of college, for personal study or for introductory courses. It aims to set a meeting between two relatives who rarely speak to each other: the Mathematics of Beauty, which shows up in some popular books and films, and the Mathematics of Toil, which is widely known. Toil can be overcome through an appropriate method of work. Beauty will be found in the achievement of a way of thinking. The first part concerns the mathematical language: the expressions “for all”, “there exists”, “implies”, “is false”, ...; what is a proof by contradiction; how to use indices, sums, induction. The second part tackles specific difficulties: to study a definition, to understand an idea and apply it, to fix a slightly wrong argument, to discuss suggestions, to explain a proof. The third part presents customary techniques and points of view in college mathematics. The reader can choose one of three difficulty levels (A, B, C).

Al diploma e alla laurea con la dislessia.
Mentre nella scuola primaria il bambino mostra una differenza evidente di prestazione della lettura rispetto ai suoi coetanei e quindi l’insegnante riconosce la discrepanza con i coetanei, nelle fasi più tardive della scolarizzazione il disturbo si evolve e le prestazioni «sembrano» molto simili a quelle degli altri studenti. E così accade che lo studente, che faticosamente ha raggiunto i livelli più alti della scolarizzazione e vede avvicinarsi l’agognato traguardo, deve ancora combattere per farsi accettare nella sua diversità. Raccogliendo esperienze e storie di studenti dislessici nella scuola secondaria di secondo grado e nell’università, il volume individua criticità e approcci di aiuto, rivolgendosi agli studenti, ai docenti e ai genitori, per mostrare come, pur con le oggettive difficoltà, si può imparare e crescere anche con la dislessia.
