Wanting to know how a diverse group of progressive, middle-class Americans defined "community," Balin chose to do her sociology dissertation on a neighborhood in conflict over the arrival of an AIDS care facility. She saw their debates as reflecting not only concerns about infectious disease, but also the community's anxieties regarding the political and social changes facing urban middle class communities in general.
