The problems related to the process of industrialisation such as biodiversity depletion, climate change and a worsening of health and living conditions, especially but not only in developing countries, intensify. Therefore, there is an increasing need to search for integrated solutions to make development more sustainable. The United Nations has acknowledged the problem and approved the “2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”. On 1st January 2016, the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the Agenda officially came into force. These goals cover the three dimensions of sustainable development: economic growth, social inclusion and environmental protection. The Encyclopedia of the U...
Public spaces mirror the complexities of urban societies: as historic social bonds have weakened and cities have become collections of individuals public open spaces have also changed from being embedded in the social fabric of the city to being a part of more impersonal and fragmented urban environments. This book offers some answers to this question through analysing the process of urban design and development in international case studies, in which the changing character, level of accessibility, and the tensions of making public spaces are explored. The Municipality of Vila Verde (Minho, Portugal) has acquired a set of five paintings, in the 80's, believed to be the portraits of past Mayors, or some other prominent personalities from the county, but their origin and identity have always been at the center of some controversy, and they had never been properly studied. In this article, published in the Boletim Cultural N.° 2, in 2006, we advanced their identity and gathered as much information as possible about them, their origins and family connections, their lives and careers, but we also proposed a more attentive look at their depictions and all the hidden symbols of power, and vanity, a sign of the 19th century mentality to which we all are the present heirs.
Results from ecological studies of the Mondego river basin carried out during the last 15 years are gathered in this book. Following a comprehensive introduction on fundamental physicochemical aspects of the system, the communities structure and diversity, nutrient cycle and plant dynamics, both in freshwater and in the estuary, are addressed. Moreover, existing environmental monitoring, assesment, and management (e.g. ecological indicators and models ) are also approached. This book represents therefore an essencial source of information, indispensable for researchers, environmental managers, and decision makers that will have to deal with such a complex system.
