The Reception of Joseph Conrad in Europe
Born and brought up in Poland bilingually in French and Polish but living for most of his professional life in England and writing in English, Joseph Conrad was, from the start, as much a European writer as he was a British one and his work – from his earliest fictions through Heart of Darkness, Nostromo and The Secret Agent to his later novels– has repeatedly been the focal point of discussions about key issues of the modern age. With chapters written by leading international scholars, this book provides a wide-ranging survey of the reception, translation and publication history of Conrad's works across Europe. Covering reviews and critical discussion, and with some attention to adaptations in other media, these chapters situate Conrad's works in their social and political context. The book also includes bibliographies of key translations in each of the European countries covered and a timeline of Conrad's reception throughout the continent.
Una mirada catalana a l'Àfrica
Com la resta d’Europa, Catalunya també mirà cap a l’Àfrica durant un dels períodes més àlgids d’expansió colonial de la història, el comprès entre mitjan segle xix i el xx. ¿Quines imatges geogràfiques construïren els catalans amb relació a l’Àfrica i al colonialisme europeu en l’època esmentada? L’anàlisi dels relats al continent africà que els viatgers catalans —i també algunes viatgeres— van escriure a partir de les seves experiències en aquestes terres ofereix algunes respostes a aquesta pregunta. Aquest llibre repassa les representacions dels llocs i de les poblacions de l’Àfrica —des del Marroc fins al Senegal, passant per Egipte— construïdes per viatgers vinculats a societats geogràfiques, centres excursionistes i ordes religiosos, a més a més dels que hi viatjaven amb propòsits militars, comercials o, simplement, turístics i d’aventura. Es detecten molts tipus de viatgers, variades motivacions per emprendre el viatge i, sobretot, un ampli ventall de mirades polièdriquesrespecte al fet colonial, algunes de les quals estan estretament vinculades al procés de construcció de la identitat nacional catalana.

Barcelona
Barcelona is regarded as a prototype of a European Mediterranean city with a long urban tradition. It has undergone a specific process of historic formation: density and compactness of urban form, evolution by extension rather than by reform. A history of urban planning necessarily includes a summary of the territorial and urban experience, the physical dimensions of the city that condition its cultural and economic development. This book centers on the construction of Barcelona, taking as its basis the most important planning operations and city projects, and drawing from diverse sources and phases. The local scale of many of the projects contrasts with the cosmopolitan aspirations that have made these interventions so innovative; including major projects for special events, such as the 1888 (World Exhibition), 1929 (Electrical Industries Exhibition) and 1992 (Olympic Games). New prospects are emerging from the recent European institutional framework, particularly changes in the economic system to a post-industrial phase. The urban planning history of Barcelona shows how the city has overcome major contradictions.
