Introduction To Second Order Partial Differential Equations, An: Classical And Variational Solutions
The book extensively introduces classical and variational partial differential equations (PDEs) to graduate and post-graduate students in Mathematics. The topics, even the most delicate, are presented in a detailed way. The book consists of two parts which focus on second order linear PDEs. Part I gives an overview of classical PDEs, that is, equations which admit strong solutions, verifying the equations pointwise. Classical solutions of the Laplace, heat, and wave equations are provided. Part II deals with variational PDEs, where weak (variational) solutions are considered. They are defined by variational formulations of the equations, based on Sobolev spaces. A comprehensive and detailed presentation of these spaces is given. Examples of variational elliptic, parabolic, and hyperbolic problems with different boundary conditions are discussed.

This volume is a special issue which is devoted to selected papers from the 10th Taiwan-Philippines Symposium on Analysis (10th TPSOA) held on 31/March–3/April 2014 at the Garden Villa Hotel, Kaohsiung city, Taiwan and organized mainly by National University of Kaohsiung. The article on page 311 has listed the bilateral participants of Taiwan and the Philippines for the 10 symposiums. The symposiums have brought together mathematicians from the Philippines and Taiwan to share their results and current research activities.

Rohna Memories Ii
On November 26, 1943 the United States sustained its largest loss of troops at sea. Over 2,000 U.S. servicemen were aboard the British troop ship HMT Rohna in the Mediterranean on their way to the China-Burma-India Theater of war. Traveling in a convoy, the Rohna and 23 other ships were attacked by German bombers. After a fierce fight that ended with no ships lost, a single bomber made a final run. Armed with the latest technology (a rocket powered, remote controlled Henschel HS-293 glide bomb), it set its sights on the Rohna. Many men were killed instantly by the direct hit. Rescue ships spent hours pulling survivors from the water. By the time the losses were totaled, 1,015 U.S. servicemen had lost their lives. After WWII, the U.S. War Department stated that of 4,453,061 American soldiers carried to Europe, only 1,094 or 0.024% were lost at sea. Of these, 1,015 went down in the Rohna.
