Mark Doran has given up on happiness, all he wants now is a little peace. A failed marriage, disappointing career and addiction to everything under the sun have made Mark chuck everything and seek the path to enlightenment. However, Mark's tranquil life goes by the wayside when his son wakes him early one Sunday with a telephone call. "Dad, I shot someone. I couldn't help it." Mark races from Washington, DC to Maryland's Eastern Shore to investigate. His son witnessed a mob killing and shot the killer in self-defense. To protect him from retaliation, Mark uses his position as a reporter to pin the killing on the vigilante Orion. He enlists the aid of an ex-cop dying of cancer to help maintain the façade. Before Mark knows it, the mob comes to town, the FBI starts investigating and the ex-cop and his psychotic friend are gearing up for a war. To make matters worse, Mark's ex-wife Yolanda can't keep her hands off him. He wants to be supportive, after all her son is in danger too, but he still bears the scars from her leaving him. Then all hell breaks loose when the real Orion pays a visit.

Nietzsche and Music

Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900) was not only a philosopher who loved and wrote about music; he was also a musician, pianist, and composer. In this ground-breaking volume, philosophers, historians, musicians, and musicologists come together to explore Nietzsche’s thought and music in all its complexity. Starting from the role that music played in the formation and articulation of Nietzsche’s thought, as well as the influence that contemporary composers had on him, the essays provide an in-depth analysis of the structural and stylistic aspects of his compositions. The volume highlights the significance of music in Nietzsche’s life and looks deeply at his musical experiments which led to a new and radically different style of composition in relation with his philosophical thought. It also traces the influence that Nietzsche had on many other musicians and musical genres, from Russian composers to current rock music and heavy metal.

A Passion for Symphonies: Robert Simpson (1921-1997)

This is the first full-length study of the symphonies of Robert Simpson to be offered to the general public. Simpson is perhaps best known for his BBC work, including the Promenade Concerts and such innovatory radio programmes as The Innocent Ear; but critics have hailed him as one of the finest writers of symphonies of the twentieth century—one who additionally spent a lifetime examining and talking about works of this kind, being particularly interested in the oeuvres of Bruckner, Nielsen and Sibelius. As a result, his compositions provide invaluable case studies for the understanding of this most demanding of compositional forms, as well as being a string of eleven masterpieces spanning the last half of the twentieth century.

Britten

Benjamin Britten was one of the outstanding British composers of the 20th century. He shot to international fame with his operas, performed by his own English Opera Group, and a series of extraordinary instrumental works. His music won a central place in the repertoire and the affection of successive generations of listeners. David Matthews brings to this biography his special insight as a fellow composer, former assistant and life-long friend of Britten to produce a uniquely personal, sensitive and authoritative account.
