This volume presents papers given at the 3rd and 4th scientific editions of the conference “Methodology and Archaeometry” held in 2015 and 2016 at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Zagreb, Croatia. It covers topics in archaeometry and archaeological methodology, which represent an essential part of collecting and processing data, which defines the validity of archaeological interpretation. Contributions explore non-destructive archaeology (geophysics and field survey), different aspects of artifact analysis, and experimental archaeology. The text brings together new research from scientists from various disciplines based on a range of methodological, analytical and theoretical perspectives, thus providing new insights and approaches, as well as new theoretical and methodological frameworks in contemporary archaeological science.
Identities and social relations are fundamental elements of societies. To approach these topics from a new and different angle, this study takes the human body as the focal point of investigation. It tracks changing identities of early Iron Age people in central Europe through body-related practices: the treatment of the body after death and human representations in art. The human remains themselves provide information on biological parameters of life, such as sex, biological age, and health status. Objects associated with the body in the grave and funerary practices give further insights on how people of the early Iron Age understood life and death, themselves, and their place in the world....
The book includes original scientific papers discussing the prehistoric themes of the southeastern Alpine and neighbouring regions by Slovenian and other authors, in which the results of new discoveries and researches in the individual regions, specific environments and analyses of individual sites or finds are presented. These articles are arranged chronologically and thematically. They shed light on the settlement pattern at the macro and micro levels (Šavel; Velušček/Čufar; Mele; Mlekuž/Črešnar; Mason), grave contexts (Ložnjak Dizdar, Gutjahr; Kmet'ová/Stegmann-Rajtár; Križ; Teržan; Dizdar/Potrebica; Cestnik; Belak), data recorded in archival sources (Grahek; Božič) or speci...
Ormož ranks among the most important archaeological sites in Slovenia. The fortified settlement from the Late Bronze and Early Iron Age extended over the area where the town stands today. It developed on a high-lying terrace on the left bank of the river Drava, which forms a broad bend right at the foothills. This site was intentionally selected, since towards the river it was protected by a steep slope, and to the east and west by relatively deep natural dykes. In the present monograph a survey is given of the results of the excavations which were carried out in Ormož during the period from 1974 to 1981.
