Growth Through Heterogeneous Innovations
We study how external versus internal innovations promote economic growth through a tractable endogenous growth framework with multiple innovation sizes, multi-product firms, and entry/exit. Firms invest in external R&D to acquire new product lines and in internal R&D to improve their existing product lines. A baseline model derives the theoretical implications of weaker scaling for external R&D versus internal R&D, and the resulting predictions align with observed empirical regularities for innovative firms. Quantifying a generalized model for the recent U.S. economy using matched Census Bureau and patent data, we observe a modest departure for external R&D from perfect scaling frameworks.

La dinàmica empresarial de la demarcació de Tarragona: creació i tancament d’empreses durant el període 1994-2009
Aquest treball s’ocupa de l’evolució del teixit empresarial a la demarcació provincial de Tarragona entre els anys 1994 i 2009. Es tracta d’un estudi de dinàmica empresarial que pretén analitzar els ritmes de creació i tancament d’empreses així com els seus determinants. Les dades subministrades per l’INE faciliten observar quina ha estat la dinàmica empresarial a la demarcació de Tarragona, i comparar-la amb la registrada a l’Estat espanyol i a Catalunya. El període d’estudi comprèn un nombre considerable d’anys, en total setze exercicis. La cobertura temporal del treball ens permet observar la creació i la destrucció del teixit empresarial en diferents conjuntures.
