Memories of My Life at the College Valley

After nearly fifty years as MFH and huntsman of England's College Valley Hunt, Martin Letts retired only when he could no longer follow his hounds through the steep rocky country in the northern hills of England. In his new memoir, Letts recalls how he bred and trained the formidable hounds that eagerly hunted this challenging countryside and would become the basis of numerous English and American packs. But Letts also recalls a host of passionate people with whom he's spent many days in the hunting field, sometimes in their best moments and sometimes in moments they'd rather forget. C. Martin Wood, MFH of the Live Oak Hounds in Florida, writes an Introduction that sets the scene for the memories that follow. "This treatise is a great example of knowledge meeting pen and paper. It will stand the tests of time as a way for the 'expert, ' as well as the novice, to get a grasp of the issues to be faced when building, developing, and hunting a cracking pack of foxhounds," writes Wood. Martin Letts's Memories of My Life at the College Valley has been edited by John Strassburger, for twenty years the editor of The Chronicle of the Horse and now its Foxhunting editor.

A collection of thirty-two foxhunting stories populated by horses, hounds, challenging obstacles, and unforgettable personalities. Accompany Norman Fine to Ireland, England, Canada, and across the United States as he meets, hunts with, and is educated by the foremost Masters, huntsmen, hound breeders, and sporting historians of the last fifty years. Fine's stories, most of them previously published in the U.S. and England, are connected chronologically by new material in which the author explains how he came to meet these larger-than-life characters, what role they played in his development from horseman to foxhunter, and how he came to hunt with their hounds.

Well, it took along time to write, I hope you think its worth it. Whats it about? A good question, I wish I knew. You could read it to find out. Basically its about my career in show business as a thespian. Well, they cant touch you for it. I come from a working class family who had no roots in show business. My interest began at an early age. My father often took me to our local theatre where we would sit in the Gallery to see the shows. I just loved it and wanted to be part of it. But how to do it, that was the question. When at first you dont succeed, pack it in. Not me, I ignored that completely. I was given a book one Christmas on HOW TO BECOME A COMEDIAN. Ive been trying ever since. Af...
