Media and Technology in 21st Century Higher and Tertiary Education in Africa

This book interrogates media and technology in the 21st century higher and tertiary education in Africa. Using Zimbabwe as its case study, the book highlights the immense changes that the digital revolution has brought to higher institutions of learning in Africa, including changes in teaching and learning. Framed from an anti-colonial perspective, the book argues that digital change, though critical in revolutionising education in Africa, has come with a price as it has resulted in some epistemological erasures and injustices meted against the poor. The book makes a critical contribution as it quests to correct the misdemeanours and injustices caused by digital gaps in African societies. Th...

Skin-lightening is currently one of the most common forms of potentially harmful body modification practices in the world and African women are among some of the most widely represented users of skin-lightening products. The overall objective of this book is to provide up-to-date evidence-based recommendations for reducing the global burden of cosmetic skin bleaching and preventing injuries related to skin bleaching in sub-Saharan Africa and Africans in diaspora. The book aims to: offer an appraisal of all relevant literature on cosmetic bleaching practices to-date, focusing on any key developments; identify and address important medical, public health issues as well as historical, genetic, psychosocial, cultural, behavioural, socioeconomic, political, institutional and environmental determinants; provide guideline recommendations that would help attenuate the burden and possibly eliminate the injuries related to skin bleaching; discuss potential developments and future directions.

Radical land reform programmes generate changes in agrarian structures and capital accumulation trajectories in the countryside. This book examines how capital accumulation is being reshaped by changing financing and marketing of agricultural commodities and presents an emerging Quadi-PMMR-model agrarian structure composed of the poor, middle, middle-to-rich peasants and some rich capitalists with a growing middle scale farmer base constituting two thirds of the rural population in Zimbabwe. This evidence based assessment, 15 years after the FTLRP, sheds light on policy outcomes and impacts on communities, revealing the changing production, marketing, capital accumulation and class formation tendencies across Zimbabwe’s settlement models and agro-ecological settings. The book fuses the reliance on agrarian political economy lenses and factor component analysis to reveal the dynamics of agrarian change and to explore the dialectic between production and circulation and between the centre and periphery in exceptional fashion that expands our understanding of Zimbabwe’s agrarian transition.

"The writers in this collection are all Zimbabwean by birth or adoption. They are academics, lawyers, politicians, civil activists, priests, and war veterans. They all share a single passion: to describe so as to understand. Their investigations cover the interconnected questions of politics, land, the environment, economics, civil rights, the opposition, and the ideologies underlying the decisions of our leaders before and since independance. The authors pull no punches, but a message of hope emerged: the commitment of many to build a better future."--Jacket.

African Belief and Knowledge Systems

The debate on the existence of African philosophy has taken central stage in academic circles, and academics and researchers have tussled with various aspects of this subject. This book notes that the debate on the existence of African philosophy is no longer necessary. Instead, it urges scholars to demonstrate the different philosophical genres embedded in African philosophy. As such, the book explores African metaphysical epistemology with the hope to redirect the debate on African philosophy. It articulates and systematizes metaphysical and epistemological issues in general and in particular on Africa. The book aptly shows how these issues intersect with the philosophy of life, traditional beliefs, knowledge systems and practices of ordinary Africans and the challenges they raise for scholarship in and on philosophy with relevance to Africa.
