Institutional Life
First Published in 1996. Volume 8 in the 8-volume series titled American Cities: A Collection of Essays. This series brings together more than 200 scholarly articles pertaining to the history and development of urban life in the United States during the past two centuries. Volume 8 discusses several institutions that are uniquely urban: voluntary associations, vigilance committees, and organized police forces. These articles attempt to consider race and ethnicity class, gender, and the various experiences of different groups of Americans.
Common, Delinquent, and Special
This book explores the historical origins and institutional shape of special education across the American states. It begins with the decade of the 1840s as states anticipated the legislation of compulsory attendance laws. With these laws, the institutional beginnings of special education emerge defined by the exemption of physically and mentally handicapped youth and by the power of schools to exclude juvenile delinquent youth as well. With the passage of these laws states formalized the "rules of access" to a common schooling, thereby structuring the school age population into three segments: the common, delinquent, and special. As the worlds of delinquency and exceptionality progressively encroached upon public schools, their inclusion has been the central force behind the expansion of special education; as a structure of handicapping categories and as a professional field within education generally. This institutional expansion of special education has occurred over the past thirty years, and has reshaped public education by defining the "rules of passage."
Girl's Schooling During The Progressive Era
This work traces the impact of a differentiated curriculum on girls' education in St. Louis public schools from 1870 to 1930. Its central argument is that the premise upon which a differentiated curriculum is founded, that schooling ought to differ among students in order prepare each for his or her place in the social order, actually led to academic decline. The attention given to the intersection of gender, race, and social class and its combined effect on girls' schooling, places this text in the new wave of critical historical scholarship in the field of educational research.
Debate Over Child Care, 1969-1990
The Debate Over Child Care: 1969-1990 offers a new perspective on the pervading problem of providing child care services in the United States. The author traces the contemporary debate over the sponsorship of child care services and compares this to the past debate over the sponsorship of kindergartens during the Progressive Era. Klein compares the function of child care across societal sectors, and points out that turf fighting and imbedded ideological differences have prohibited the development of a proactive social policy for providing needed child care services. She analyzes the advantages and disadvantages of five different sponsors: the public schools, the church, private enterprise, non-profit organizations, and corporations. Past and present federal legislation is discussed in relation to the divisive issue of sponsorship.

The Transatlantic Kindergarten
The kindergarten, which offered an innovative approach to early childhood education, was invented in the German-speaking world and arrived in the United States along with German political exiles in the 1850s. In both the United States and Germany, activist women worked to develop and promote this new form of education. Over the course of three generations they created one of the most successful transnational women's movements of the nineteenth century. In this book, Ann Taylor Allen presents the first transnational history of the kindergarten as it developed in both Germany and America between 1840 and 1919.
