Normal motor development proceedsin an orderly sequence of events, fromthe apedal to the quadrupedal to thebipedal level. The normal childchanges and modifies sensorimotorpatterns of early and primitive movementsand adapts them gradually tomore complex functions. In cerebralpalsy, sensorimotor experience hasbeen abnormal from the beginning.The child can make use of his abnormalsensorimotor patterns only towhatever degree he may be involved.In cerebral palsy, normal maturationis interrupted and an insufficientlydeveloped postural reflex mechanismand prolonged retention of primitivetotal patterns are manifested.
