The Oxford Handbook of the South African Economy

The Best Intentions

Experts estimate that nearly 60 percent of all U.S. pregnanciesâ€"and 81 percent of pregnancies among adolescentsâ€"are unintended. Yet the topic of preventing these unintended pregnancies has long been treated gingerly because of personal sensitivities and public controversies, especially the angry debate over abortion. Additionally, child welfare advocates long have overlooked the connection between pregnancy planning and the improved well-being of families and communities that results when children are wanted. Now, current issuesâ€"health care and welfare reform, and the new international focus on populationâ€"are drawing attention to the consequences of unintended pregnancy. ...

Explorations of Inequality: Childhood Immunization

This report takes a detailed look at the current status of childhood immunization in 10 priority countries: Afghanistan Chad Democratic Republic of the Congo Ethiopia India Indonesia Kenya Nigeria Pakistan and Uganda. In each country childhood immunization coverage is broken down by multiple factors to show inequality according to child mother household and geographical characteristics. Then the report employs multiple regression analysis to identify factors that are associated with immunization coverage. A multicountry assessment illustrates similarities and differences between countries. The findings of the report show how a child?s likelihood of being vaccinated is affected by compounding advantage or vulnerability; they also provide insight into how policies programmes and practices can be targeted to promote universal childhood immunization coverage. Interactive visuals and tables accompany the report enabling further exploration of the data.

In examining the relationship between nutritional exposure and disease aetiology, the importance of a carefully considered experimental design cannot be overstated. A sound experimental design involves the formulation of a clear research hypothesis and the identification of appropriate measures of exposure and outcome. It is essential that these variables can be measured with a minimum of error, whilst taking into account the effects of chance and bias, and being aware of the risk of confounding variables. The first edition of Design Concepts in Nutritional Epidemiology presented a throrough guide to research methods in nutritional epidemiology. Since publication of the 1st edition, we now h...
