Approaching East-Central Europe over the Centuries
During the 1970s the todays Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research (Bundesministerium für Bildung, Wissenschaft und Forschung, BMBWF) supported the founding of the Center for Austrian Studies at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis and the Austrian Chair at Stanford University in California. These foundings were the initial incentives for the world wide 'spreading' of similar institutions; currently nine Centers for Austrian and Central European Studies exist in seven states on three continents. The funding of the Ministry enables to connect senior with young scholars, to help the latter, to participate and benefit from the scientific connection of the former, as the Austrian say, `to sniff the scientific air', and to get in touch with the respective national scientific community, to avoid prejudices, and to spread a better understanding and knowledge about Austria and Central Europe. This volume contains the annual reports (2016/2017) of the Center Director's and the presented papers of their PhDs, which discuss various topics on (East-)Central European History from various perspectives and in different centuries.
Documents on the Papal Plenary Indulgences 1300-1517 Preached in the Regnum Teutonicum
Catholics and Protestants have disputed the validity and legitimacy of papal plenary indulgences for 500 years without a unitary corpus of the relevant texts documenting the indulgence campaigns which so exercised Luther and his contemporaries. This volume prints for the first time in a modern edition the full text of all available papal bulls and brevia between 1300 and 1517 which granted plenary indulgences (i.e. those which cancelled all previously accrued temporal punishment due to sin), the instructions to the commissioners on how to preach (and defend) the indulgences and conduct the campaigns, and finally the extensions of indulgence campaigns. The Regnum Teutonicum provides the geographical framework, since it includes all the areas where the Reformation initially broke out.
Citizenship, Migration and Social Rights
The tensions between European conceptions of the welfare state and transnational migration have caused heated political, public, and academic debates over the last decades. Historiography, however, has not yet explored in depth how European societies struggled with this dilemma-filled relationship in the formative phases of modern welfare states from the late nineteenth century to the post-war era. The present volume contributes to filling this gap and thus to putting a highly topical issue into historical perspective. Since the First World War, in most European countries labor offices have been established. Within a few years they have become indispensable social-political phenomenons of the European welfare states. Later, state-run labor market instruments played a key role in the dictatorships of Austria and other European countries and shaped the social policy of Japan and Brazil. In their overviews and contributions to specific aspects of the labor market, the authors focus on the history of the Austrian employment offices with the aim of placing them in a larger socio-political and international historical context.

Tagebücher werden seit 1800 wissenschaftlich ausgewertet. Wiederholt ist das in den Anfangsphasen neuer Fächer zu beobachten. Die Absichten der Forscher/innen waren dabei jeweils unterschiedlich: Die Kleinkinderforschung des 19. Jahrhunderts und die Jugendpsychologie ab 1920 haben maßgebende Thesen über ›Normalverläufe‹ der menschlichen Entwicklung auf Selbstzeugnissen aufgebaut.
