Agency
Now is not a time for metaphorical sticking plasters or vanity projects, it is a time for change and a time for action. The mandate of architects and urbanists today goes way beyond designing buildings, it includes changing behavior, influencing and impacting policy, and building bottom-up agency with new understandings of value, justice, and cultural production. This task is best achieved by sharing not just strategies but also practice – completely openly and freely. This sixth volume in the Archifutures series for the Future Architecture platform, therefore, focuses on emerging narratives and strategies that can help architects adapt their practice towards more effective agency in order to meet the greater, more universal tasks that are upon all of humankind. The projects featured here show ways forward in addressing ecological destruction, racial injustice, housing inequality, and landscapes of conflict. They point to new modes of design practice, rethinking what it means to be “an architect” in a world of spatial injustice.
The Uncommon Sense Guide to 1030 Wien
The Uncommon Sense Guidebook to 1030 Wien takes the format of a conventional city guide to explore fictions and realities of the third district of Vienna. The guide presents a series of poetical journeys. It is a collective undertaking of finding and developing new ways of getting lost in a familiar urban landscape, of absorbing a city without consuming it, of expressing ones right to the city, and not implying that a city would be a commodity available to some and not to others. Developed during the pandemic within the frame of a semester-long workshop by students of the Social Design masters program at the University for Applied Arts Vienna the book is the fifth issue of the Social Readers collection.
The Wanderer

They seem to be human, they try to find out what that means, but in order to do that, they have to become animal, river, object, equals and opposites, the same in their differences. In the beginning there were ideas. They were dwelling places. The Wanderer spent time in all of them, slowly growing, changing, becoming. Moving from one to the other, mirroring them, absorbing them. The Space of Literature
Maurice Blanchot, the eminent literary and cultural critic, has had a vast influence on contemporary French writers--among them Jean Paul Sartre and Jacques Derrida. From the 1930s through the present day, his writings have been shaping the international literary consciousness. The Space of Literature, first published in France in 1955, is central to the development of Blanchot's thought. In it he reflects on literature and the unique demand it makes upon our attention. Thus he explores the process of reading as well as the nature of artistic creativity, all the while considering the relation of the literary work to time, to history, and to death. This book consists not so much in the application of a critical method or the demonstration of a theory of literature as in a patiently deliberate meditation upon the literary experience, informed most notably by studies of Mallarmé, Kafka, Rilke, and Hölderlin. Blanchot's discussions of those writers are among the finest in any language.
