The Infraordinary
Bilingual edition (English/German) / Zweisprachige Ausgabe (deutsch/englisch) GAM's twentieth volume is dedicated to the search for the everyday in architecture. Its title, "The Infraordinary," refers to an artistic concept first used by Paul Virilio and Georges Perec: In the 1970s, they introduced the term l'infra-ordinaire to describe the habitual and ordinary--the opposite of the extraordinary. With this in mind, GAM 20 aims to delve more deeply into the unexceptional in architecture. Seeking to go beyond glorifying or emphasizing the banal, the intention is to highlight stories of the repurposing and refurbishment of existing architecture, as well as its day-to-day use. In daily life, after all, architecture tends not to look the way it does in glossy magazines, on the websites of renowned architecture firms, or on Instagram. Architecture Transformed
This book examines the key role of the digital image in architecture over four decades – in the process of digitizing knowledge in theory and practice – as well as its influence on architectural design and visualization: The transition from the analogue to the digital age is analyzed on the basis of 51 design visualizations, from hand drawings to hybrid methods to computer renderings, in order to illustrate how architecture has been impacted by digital methods and media. The City as Architecture
Architecture creates complex spatial situations that are the subject of urban design. Design uses a repertoire of specific architectural means in a creative way, resulting in cities that can be lived in and perceived in their three-dimensional experience. The current book, an extended new edition of Architecture of the City (2016), describes the repertoire with which architecture and design regain an entry to urbanistics. It pleads for an "architectonic turn" in urbanistics – a demand to finally comprehend the city architecturally: the issue is not just about buildings in the city, but about architecture of the city as a whole, as is clearly expressed in the new title of City as Architecture.
Der Städtebau der Stuttgarter Schule
Die sogenannte "Stuttgarter Schule" wurde bislang fast ausschließlich als eine Architekturlehre dokumentiert, interpretiert und kritisiert. Dabei haben ihre wichtigsten Exponenten der verschiedenen Epochen wie Bonatz, Schmitthenner oder Döcker ein beachtliches städtebauliches Werk aufzuweisen. Die in diesem Buch versammelten Beiträge setzen sich mit der bisher weithin unbeachteten Rolle auseinander, die der Städtebau in der sogenannten "Stuttgarter Schule" eingenommen hat. Den Kern bilden die überarbeiteten Vorträge auf dem aus Anlass des 50-jährigen Bestehens des Städtebau-Instituts veranstalteten Symposium "Stuttgarter Städtebau-Schule?" im Dezember 2013 an der Universität Stuttgart. Die Beiträge blicken zurück auf die universitäre Städtebaulehre in Stuttgart seit ihren Anfängen bis zum vorletzten Generationenwechsel der Städtebaulehrer in den frühen 1990er Jahren. Thematisiert werden auch Werk und Wirkung der Protagonisten auf die städtebauliche Entwicklung Stuttgarts.00.
