The Mermaid and the Partridge
For some years a project has been under way to carry out a thoroughgoing revision of volume V in the series Discoveries in the Judaean Desert (of Jordan). The team of scholars responsible for the new edition - including many who have written monographs or extensive studies on the respective manuscripts for which they have now assumed responsibility - was invited by the Department of Biblical Exegesis of the Faculty of Theology at the University of Copenhagen to meet in Copenhagen in June 2009. The conference offered the opportunity for the presentation of some working papers on topics that were of particular concern to the individual contributors to the revision. The present volume represents the ongoing work on the edition, and reflects the development in approaches and viewpoints since the texts were first published (1968) as well as important aspects of the present Qumran scholarship.

Amos and the Cosmic Imagination
Said to contain the words of the earliest of the biblical prophets (8th century BCE), the book of Amos is reinterpreted by the author in light of new and sometimes controversial historical approaches to the Bible. Amos is read as the literary product of the Persian-era community in Judah. Its representations of divine-human communication are investigated in the context of the ancient writers' own role as transmitters and shapers of religious traditions. It has been conceived as a coherent contribution to the question of textuality in the Dead Sea Scrolls explored from a wide range of perspectives. These include material aspects of the texts, performance, reception, classification, scribal culture, composition, reworking, form and genre, and the issue of the extent to which any of the texts relate (to) social realities in the Second Temple period. Almost every contribution engages with Brooke’s own remarkably wide-ranging, incisive, and innovative research on the Scrolls. The twenty-eight contributors are colleagues and students of the honouree and include leading scholars alongside promising new voices from across the field.
A Bibliography of the Finds in the Desert of Judah, 1970-95
This volume contains a bibliography of the research on the Dead Sea Scrolls published during the last 25 years, and as such it provides scholars with an indispensable tool for further research. Although originally planned as a continuation of B. Jongeling's A Classified Bibliography of the Finds of the Desert of Judah 1958-1969, the materials are presented in a different way in order to avoid unnecessary duplications of entries. Each bibliographical entry is alphabetically listed in the first part of the book and is provided with an identification number which allows for multiple classifications. The second part offers a sophisticated classification of the materials by themes, topics and key words, but also by manuscript numbers and titles of the compositions as well as by authors.

Hellenistic Jews and Consolatory Rhetoric
Christine R. Trotter elucidates how Hellenistic Jewish writers attempted to comfort those living in the midst of and in the wake of persecution and violence. While past scholarship has explored this question primarily in terms of the development of Jewish apocalypticism and afterlife beliefs, Christine R. Trotter takes a comprehensive approach by investigating how Hellenistic Jewish authors engaged with ancient consolatory rhetoric, that is, the means of persuasion intended to move a suffering person out of grief and into joy. Through studies on 2 Maccabees, the Wisdom of Solomon, 1 Thessalonians, and Hebrews, the author explicates how Hellenistic Jewish authors navigated the diverse traditions of consolation within their biblical heritage and Greco-Roman culture. Her work has important implications for the genre of 1 Thessalonians and the dates of composition of the Wisdom of Solomon and Hebrews.

How and in what respects are the Petrine social instructions shaped by the theological vision of the author of 1 Peter? This publication investigates the coherence between the social behavioural instructions and the theological teachings found in 1 Peter. Engaging with the Balch-Elliott debate, Dr Joyce Sun argues that the core question should not be whether Christians should separate from, or accommodate to, wider society, but whether their behaviour is consistent with their ultimate allegiance to God. Sun convincingly demonstrates that the social distinctiveness of Christian communities was actively encouraged in the Petrine literature as a form of cultural and spiritual opposition to wider societal norms.
