Pan Michael: An Historical Novel of Poland, the Ukraine, and Turkey

After the close of the Hungarian war, when the marriage of Pan Andrei Kmita and Panna Aleksandra Billevich was celebrated, a cavalier, equally meritorious and famous in the Commonwealth, Pan Michael Volodyovski, colonel of the Lauda squadron, was to enter the bonds of marriage with Panna Anna Borzobogati Krasienski. But notable hindrances rose, which delayed and put back the affair. The lady was a foster-daughter of Princess Griselda Vishnyevetski, without whose permission Panna Anna would in no wise consent to the wedding. Pan Michael was forced therefore to leave his affianced in Vodokty, by reason of the troubled times, and go alone to Zamost for the consent and the blessing of the prince...

The Doll

This brilliant romantic novel of three generations of men in Warsaw is “19th-century realism at its best.” (Czesław Miłosz) Boleslaw Prus is often compared to Chekhov, and Prus’s masterpiece might be described as an intimate epic, a beautifully detailed, utterly absorbing exploration of life in late-nineteenth-century Warsaw, which is also a prophetic reckoning with some of the social forces—imperialism, nationalism, anti-Semitism among them—that would soon convulse Europe as never before. But The Doll is above all a brilliant novel of character, dramatizing conflicting ideas through the various convictions, ambitions, confusions, and frustrations of an extensive and varied cast....

Drama. Translated from the Polish by Gerard T. Kapolka. KORDIAN is a Polish classic written in 1833 by Juliusz Slowacki and features an amalgam of revolutionary spirit, tradition, modernist bravado and suffering--topics navigated by a young Romantic protagonist after whom the play is named. Within the canon of Polish literature KORDIAN offers pivotal insight into the development of Poland's Romantic movement (her literary golden age), and Polish literature as a whole. The Green Lantern Press is pleased to publish the play's first English translation by Gerard T. Kapolka. Illustrations by Lilli Carré and silkscreen covers by Aay Preston-Myint. This book was published in an edition of 500.

The Causes of Evolution

J.B.S. Haldane (1892-1964), one of the founders of the science of population genetics, was also one of the greatest practitioners of the art of explaining science to the layperson. Haldane was a superb story-teller, as his essays and his children's books attest. In The Causes of Evolution he not only helped to marry the new science of genetics to the older one of evolutionary theory but also provided an accessible introduction to the genetical basis of evolution by natural selection. Egbert Leigh's new introduction to this classic work places it in the context of the ongoing study of evolution. Describing Haldane's refusal to be confined by a "System" as a "light-hearted" one, Leigh points out that we are now finding that "Haldane's questions are the appropriate next stage in learning how adaptation can evolve. We are now ready to reap the benefit of the fact that Haldane was a free man in the sense that really matters."
