Krystian Lupa est né en 1943, à Jastrzebie Zdroj, dans cette Silésie déchirée depuis toujours entre l'Allemagne et la Pologne. Après s'étre passionné pour le dessin, puis le cinéma, Krystian Lupa se tourne vers le théâtre où il se livre à un véritable travail expérimental. Krystian Lupa commence à enseigner à l'Institut d'Art Dramatique de Cracovie puis est nommé metteur en scène permanent du Stary Teatr. Il y partage son temps entre l'enseignement, il occupe la chaire de Doyen de la faculté de mise en scène, et son travail de metteur en scène. Depuis ce moment, qui a représenté un tournant dans sa manière d'aborder le théatre, Krystian Lupa s'est tourné résolument vers la littérature, notamment autrichienne, qu'il adapte pour la scène en traduisant lui même les textes. En 1992, Krystian Lupa reçoit le prix Leon Schiller. Célèbre en Pologne et sur la scène internationale, notamment en Allemagne, Krystian Lupa n'a été découvert que tardivement en France.
