Pupillary Dynamics and Behavior
The University of Manitoba Symposium on Pupillometry was held in Winnipeg, Manitoba, October 17-19, 1973. The seed of the idea was planted in 1967 when Raymond Daly of the University of Windsor first interested me in the utility of the pupil as a dependent measure in psychology. From that time on I have read as much as possible about the pupil and in late 1971 it occurred to me that it might be a good idea to bring together those pupil lary investigators whose research had the greatest impression upon me. This book is one of happier consequences of the Symposium. The guiding principle behind the selection of participants was a blend of three considerations: (1) long standing research or scholarly interest in problems associated with the eye and the pupil; (2) outstanding respect of the participant by his colleagues involved in pupillometric research; and (3) significant contributions to the learned literature.

Pain without Boundaries: Inquiries across Cultures
In May 2013, 28 scholars from 19 countries gathered in Prague, Czech Republic, to explore the many complex issues surrounding pain. This unique meeting, the 4th Global Making Sense of Pain Conference, allowed participants to remain together for three days as they explored perspectives from many different disciplines -- from medicine to music; from art to medical humanities; from psychology to writing and rhetoric; from cognition to intuition. The multidisciplinary and cross-cultural nature of the conference provided an engaging forum for scholars to draw inspiration and knowledge on the nature and function of pain, as perceived through the lenses of various fields and research methodologies. This volume presents a sample of the contributions from this conference, divided into the following categories: Pain and Thinking, Contemplating Pain, Creating from Pain, and Personalising Pain.
The Attakapas Country
This comprehensive volume traces the history of Lafayette Parish, from its earliest beginnings and the struggle between the Attakapas Indians and the first white settlers, French Canadians, English traders, and French trappers to the conditions in 1959, when this historical work was first published. Over the course of this history, Griffin analyses everything from the territorial and political evolution of the parish to the development of transportation and travel, and from the founding of the schools to the early financial and industrial conditions. Griffin also provides accounts of the flood of 1927, the greatest challenge Lafayette Parish had to overcome in its early history and a sign of the persevering spirit that would help the parish to overcome such destructive forces.
The Eye and the Beholder
In The Eye and the Beholder the author singles out a topic already touched upon in her previous book, Colour in Sculpture. By raising the question of how significant the colouring of the eye is to figurative representations of the late medieval and early modern period, Hannelore Hägele examines the different solutions open to the sculptor, which vary depending on historical and cultural parameters. The created eye must suit purpose and style. She discusses a number of unusual aspects of this: sculpted eyes in antiquity; the art and craft of polychromy; partial polychromy; emotions and expressions; the gaze and the glance; from the sculpted eye to colour and the glass eye; and what the eye cannot see. Dr Hägele asks whether advances in optics and other sciences, or theological concepts such as the eye of God and the inner eye, determined the way in which eyes were perceived and represented. It is the beholder, whether as maker or viewer, who engages with and judges the worth of any creative effort and what it contributes to an understanding of the seen and the unseen. The illustrations and the many coloured plates accompanying the text offer an overview of the subject.
