Studies on Iron Age Moab and Neighbouring Areas in Honour of Michèle Daviau
This volume of essays, in honour of Professor Michele Daviau, focuses on the archaeology of the area of central Transjordan known in antiquity as Moab. The range is wide, covering social organisation (the polycentric nature of social order, tribalism and segmentary society), studies of the environment and settlements in Iron Age Moab, Moabite pottery production, the concept of sacred space in ancient Moab, studies of particular sites and objects, and a survey of bioarchaeology in Transjordan. It includes papers dealing explicitly with material from Daviau's own projects in the Wadi ath-Thamad and Khirbat al-Mudayna, and some which extend their focus to include Moab's neighbours and a wider chronological span. The international contributors comprise the leading authorities on the archaeology of Moab, and the volume as a whole offers an up-to-date picture of the state of archaeological research on ancient Moab.

A Wayside Shrine in Northern Moab: Excavations in the Wadi ath-Thamad
Major recent excavations, have shed much light on the complexity of Iron Age society and religion in southern Palestine, a region where both Judeans and Edomites lived. However, it is not clear whether the religious practices attested at these sites were a reflection of localised customs or were common rituals for peoples of Cisjordan and we do not know their extent. The Iron Age Pottery
In 'Excavations at Tall Jawa, Jordan: Volume 3, The Iron Age Pottery', Michele Daviau presents a detailed typology of the Iron Age pottery excavated from 1989 to 1995. She looks beyond the formal changes to an in-depth analysis of the forming techniques employed to make each type of vessel from bowls to colanders, cooking pots to pithoi. The changes in fabric composition from Iron I to Iron II were more significant than those from Iron IIB to IIC, although changes in surface treatment, especially slip color, were noticeable. Petrographic analysis of Iron I pottery by Stanley Klassen contributes to our growing corpus of fabric types, while Peter Epler documents typical Ammonite painted patterns and Elaine Kirby and Marianne Kraft present a typology of potters' marks.
Excavations at Tall Jawa, Jordan, Volume 1 The Iron Age Town
Located in a strategic position on the southern flank of the Ammonite hill country, overlooking the Madaba Plain, the earliest settlement at Tall Jawa dates to the Iron I period (1100-900 BC). This settlement was redesigned during Iron Age II (900-600 BC), and consisted of a walled town, surrounded by a casemate style fortification system and a multi-chambered gate complex. Major buildings, standing to the second storey, are described in detail with their furnishings and contents. A marked change in architecture, ceramic technology, and high status artefacts mark the high point of Tall Jawa during the period of the Assyrian empire (730-600 BC). The major features of each structure are illustrated both in the text and on a CD-ROM. This volume presents the final report of six seasons of excavations at Tall Jawa in central Jordan. The particular focus of this report is the architecture and stratigraphy of the settlements which occupied the site during the Iron Age (1100-600 BC).
The Construction of Shame in the Hebrew Bible
This book explores the phenomenon of shame in the Hebrew bible. It focuses particularly on the major prophets, because shame vocabulary is most prominent there. Shame has been widely discussed in the literature of psychology and anthropology; the book discusses the findings of both disciplines in some detail. It emphasises the social-anthropological honour/shame model, which a considerable number of biblical scholars since the early 1990s have embraced enthusiastically. The author highlights the shortcomings of this heuristic model and proposes a number of alternative critical approaches.
My Life and Career as a Biblical Scholar
Despite growing up in a poor family during the 1930s and '40s, Van Seters eventually excelled at the University of Toronto and earned a PhD at Yale University in ancient Near Eastern and Hebrew studies. Before Van Seters became a teacher, he and his wife spent three-quarters of a year in Palestine, becoming familiar with the whole region. Later in his career Van Seters assisted in archaeological expeditions in Jordan and Egypt. Visits to the Near East across his career broadened his understanding and appreciation of the biblical texts he studied professionally. Van Seters spent most of his working life teaching in universities--first at the University of Toronto, and then for over twenty years at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. This book not only chronicles what Van Seters has accomplished as a biblical scholar but also tells how he has become such a scholar. He hopes that experiences recorded here may guide young scholars to develop fruitful careers in biblical studies.
