Intimate partner violence against women with disabilities is a widespread problem, yet research on intimate partner violence among women with disabilities is limited. This case describes a research study developed to address this research gap. When we began conducting our research, existing databases collecting statistics on crime and intimate partner violence lacked pertinent information regarding disability. We conducted a retrospective analysis of previously collected clinical data from an intimate partner violence program dedicated to serving individuals with disabilities, using the technique known as clinical data mining. This method was employed to create a database of information regarding survivors of intimate partner violence with disabilities, which has been analyzed by the authors to inform several research studies to date. In this case, we discuss the practical challenges of conducting research using clinical data mining, as well as the benefits of reviewing clinical case records for research purposes.

The Gift of Violence

In today's modern world, we are largely isolated from the kind of savagery our ancestors faced on a daily basis. Although violence was as natural to our evolutionary development as sex and food, it has become foreign to most of us: at once demonized and glamorized, but almost always deeply misunderstood. Our hard-earned and hard-wired instincts—our evolved and trained ability to survive and overcome violent encounters—have been compromised. Yet, as even a cursory look at news headlines or a police blotter will reveal, the threat of violent crime is ever-present, and those we've entrusted to protect us cannot always be relied upon. The Gift of Violence tells the story of this vulnerabilit...

Clinical Assessment for Social Workers

"The fifth edition of Clinical Assessment, like earlier editions of this text, continues to show how to combine practice wisdom and evidence-based methods when formulating assessments and intervention plans. This new edition also emphasizes the biopsychosocial-spiritual framework and the importance of the strengths perspective in assessment, including updates on neuroscience. Additionally, every chapter in this fifth edition includes new updated information that covers approaches to assessment, and how to assess various client populations including clients who experience adverse childhood experiences, trauma and clients from under represented minority backgrounds. Like the 4th Edition of this text measurement instruments are added in each chapter including measures from the public domain that can be used for pedagogy and clinical practice"--
