Economic activity in most cities relies heavily on the movement of goods via freight vehicles. The freight transportation system has a direct impact on the livelihood and success of urban areas; however, the presence of trucks on the freeway system further increases congestion as the trucks interact with passenger vehicles. Trucks take up a large portion of roadway space, and the places that rely on freight the most are typically those where there is a high concentration of people and activities. The objective of this study was to perform rigorous safety effectiveness evaluations of variable speed limit (VSL) implementation on freeway corridors. To accomplish this objective, the research team compiled safety data from Virginia, Wyoming, and Georgia and used an interrupted time series study design (with a comparison group for Georgia). The team analyzed data using logistic and negative binomial generalized estimating equations models. The results from Wyoming and Georgia produced evidence of significant reductions in several types of crashes. The research team found total crash reductions of 34.4 and 29.2 percent associated with VSL installations in Wyoming and Georgia, respectively. ...
The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is in the process of conducting several parallel efforts to evaluate rural highway horizontal curves. Following the adoption of the 2011 Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, district personnel are checking and updating posted curve advisory speeds and other curve traffic control devices (e.g., Chevrons) in response to the December 31, 2019, compliance date.
