The Health of Women in Latin America and the Caribbean
This book was prepared by World Bank in collaboration with the Chinese government and leading academics. It argues that, in order to address the growing economic, social, and political pressures of the 21st Century, China will have to build solid foundations for a knowledge-based economy by updating the economic and institutional regime, upgrading education and learning, and building information infrastructure. China must also raise the technological level of the economy by diffusing new technologies actively throughout the economy, improving the research and development sytem, and exploiting global knowledge.

This study has two main objectives: 1) to analyze trends and differences in women's health, examples of good practices in delivery and financing of women's health programs; and the key dimensions of women's health that are relevant for the health reforms currently underway in Latin America; and 2) to provide guidance for governments and program designers in addressing the most pressing causes of women's ill health, within the context of broader sectoral and national policies. Burkina Faso
Burkina Faso has the second highest HIV/AIDS infection rates in West Africa, with an overall HIV prevalence rate of around 7.2 percent. A large number of development agencies are active in the fight against HIV/AIDS. An innovative community driven scheme to the epidemic was piloted under a recently completed Bank project and is now being replicated under a follow up HIV/AIDS Disaster Response Project. This brief describes the design of this pilot scheme both in terms of process and content; presents preliminary results; and identifies key lessons and future challenges.
Economic and Social Consequences of Cancer in Kenya
The burden of NCDs in Kenya is rising rapidly, and now accounts for more than 50 percent of all hospital admissions, and nearly 30 percent of total deaths. Cancer is the second leading cause of NCD mortality in Kenya, with the incidence of cancer nearly doubling between 2008-2012. The illness affects Kenyans of all ages and socio-economic backgrounds, with an increasing risk of cancer as age progresses. Most cancer cases are diagnosed at an advanced stage when treatment options are limited, leading to poor prognosis and high fatality rates.
